What you may need to know:
1. Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) seeks aid from Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) when she is targeted by a gang of outlaws.
2. “In a world…” Classic.
3. This has had a very troubled gestation. Original director Lynne Ramsay left on the first day of production. Gavin O’Connor then took over. Ewan McGregor replaced both Jude Law and Bradley Cooper, and Joel Edgerton replaced Michael Fassbender.
4. Combined with distribution troubles, high production costs and traditional audience apathy for Westerns in general, and the prognosis doesn’t look too healthy.
5. Broadsheet prognosis: Western woes.
Release Date: January 29

IS there really an audience apathy for Westerns?
I thought the opposite right now. I grew up on them (hat-tip to TG4 for keeping the swashbuckling ye-haws and fireside cowboy alive), and the latest Westerns have been brave to produce and pretty good. I sensed an appetite from reviewers and there still exists the available subject matter out there with some of the less well-know outlaws, American Indians and true Gold Rush stories. Nostalgia alone won’t do it but the production and casting is all there.
I thought slow west was pretty good
Time for you to change your name to “Spaghetti Western”….
Pump – 1989
F Troop – 1965
Why do all girls called Jane look all innocent but would happily shoot bullets if they could.
It’s a calamity for sure.
