It wouldn’t do for the other bishops ‘on the home island’ to be mentioning how many of their flock were killed at the front, and the poor Irish bishop to have no dead paddies to refer to before swigging his sherry.

The plucky paddy, always willing to walk out in front of a machine gun for the king (German father, hilariously enough, and cousin to the current kaiser, would you belive!) bravo paddy, pat on the head for you, we can’t let the Bosche get a slice of the Empire we shot and stabbed around the world to ‘acquire’. Gen. Melchet. 200 miles behind the front, 1914.

    Probably.

Is this the ‘King’s Shilling‘ that you speak of?

Listen here old boy, did you know we can send them to the front-line and get the blighters killed, thereby reducing that shilling to truppence?

Pip pip your Majesty, how dare you leave us out, we have plenty of young fellows round these parts that would make excellent cannon fodder.

I’ll look after the place while they’re gone.
