From top: Sunday Business Post at the weekend; Taoiseach Enda Kenny with Paypal Ireland boss Louise Phelan at the Paypal HQ in Dundalk, Co. Louth earlier today

In the Sunday Business Post at the weekend, in an article by journalists Pat Leahy and Michael Brennan, a “key government strategist” was quoted as saying: “We’ll scare the shit out of them [the electorate] for the last ten days.”

Further to this…

Fiach Kelly, in the Irish Times, reports:

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has claimed there could be a “flight” of jobs and capital from Ireland if some alternatives to the Fine Gael-Labour coalition are elected to government…

“There are alternatives, but there are consequences to the alternatives,” he said.

“I do not want to see the flight from this country of either capital or jobs or lack of investment coming in here. And what you see is difficulties in other countries. Greece is back in recession, Spain hasn’t been able to form a government and there are rising interest rates in Portugal. We’re in a very much stronger position than we were. We still have some distance to travel and there are still many challenges out there.”

“That’s a choice for the people and I think they will reflect on that very carefully in the next seven to ten days. They decide what direction our country goes: forwards or backwards.”

Jesus Christ, they really have nothing but sneering contempt for us, they really don’t.

A financial bomb will go off in Dublin too no doubt.
Let’s hope it is strapped to the chest of an investment banker.

  2. Neilo

And y’know Ireland Inc. could plop straight back into recession too if the slide in banking shares isn’t halted and we continue to spend money like drunken sailors in a Shanghai knocking shop. This is poor quality fearmongering from the Taoiseach,

    1. classter

Part of the reason that it is poor quality is that FG have spent the last few months destroying any reputation for economic competence by making ill-thought-out, unfunded promises.

“There are alternatives, but there are consequences to the alternatives,”

Now be good little plebs and do as you’re told and we’ll say no more aboushish.

I genuinely hate that jumped up rural teacher who qualified as taoiseach by a long stretch of doing precisely nothing in his daddy’s seat on the back benches.

    1. Cup of tea anyone?

Not a big fan of enda but I do think this is taken a little out of context. From the story he told the N*** was not the focal point of the story. He was not using the term to put someone down or as a slur, He was quoting a surprising response from his bartender.
I have heard people tell the story of the South Park episode where Randy says the Nword but I dont see them as racist.

      1. Major Thrill

Even if I didn’t think it made him a racist I’d still think he was the kind of thundering idiot who thinks that repeating a massively loaded word in a pointless anecdote was appropriate and wouldn’t bring a storm of anger his way.
Whatever you think about the politics of the word, it isn’t one you can expect to use and not suffer a backlash. I don’t care how much you love Chris Rock or how “they” get to use it.

” On three occasions Mr Kenny told political journalists he did not want to hear or read reports on the story. Journalists from daily newspapers and radio and television dutifully complied with this request.”

This tactic of dishonesty has worked in the last few referendums we got wrong, scare the poo out of everyone…
Hopefully people will see through this cynical dishonesty and destroy them. Contempt is all they have for us, it’s all they ever had. It’s the same as 150 years ago, “it would all work out totally to our benefit if it wasn’t for the damn citizens and their damn requirements for a civilised society getting in the way” – absentee genocidal landlord, 1840/FG focus group, 2016.

    Probably,

  5. 15 cents

ah the classic ‘use fear to control the population’ .. disgusting. dishonest. intrinsically Enda. last night when he wouldnt shut up, and sexy as hell sassy Claire Byrne was pushin him to finish, he insisted on making one last point, and all it was was “he was in the Ra!” .. oh yea good point, Enda. and relevant to what you were saying. you absolute jack.

  6. Rob_G

    He’s right.

Do we really want the Socialist Party renationalising Dell? Do we really want Martin Ferris as Minister for Justice?

As prone to gaffes as Enda might be, we can at least be reasonably sure that he won’t go off on an economic kamikazee mission if reelected.

      1. ReproBertie

SD are only running 14 candidates which is not enough to form a government so what alternative do you suggest? FF?

          1. ReproBertie

No, stop. I was asking a genuine question, not having a go.

We’re going to end up with one of FG/FF or FG/Lab (with Renua, SD or a smattering of independents) or FF/SF. I don’t believe Right to Change will have enough to form a government even if they sign up SD (if they’re not part of it already).

So my question was, if we don’t want FG/FF/Labour what alternative do we have?

          2. ReproBertie

In answer to my own question SD are not in the Right To Change.

Even though Right to Change are running over 100 candidates but they will not get anything near that number elected as they have more candidates than seats in some constituencies.

          3. classter

            This is the problem, Repro.

I cannot vote for Renua, FF or SF. Full stop,

Most of the independents seem to be good only as motivated opposition.

A vote for FG is difficult to stomach, especially while Enda is the leader.
Labour similarly and actually Labour typically don’t seem to be all that interested in governance.

The Soc Dems do seem the best of the bunch but they are nowhere near the level required to form a govt.

  7. Chiara

I don’t agree with a lot of their manifesto like religious affiliation and not allowing for abortion etc.. but come on give these people some credit. If somebody told you 5 years ago that Ireland would be out of the Troika/IMF that fast and with actual growth forecast you would have laughed. don’t you think you are being a little ingrateful?

    1. classter

      You have a point, Chiara.

The problem, however, is that Enda just isn’t up to the job. Enda’s tactic for most of his term has been to cleave to the FF style of govt. Those expecting (for better or for worse) a tough, ideologically-motivated, reforming, right-wing govt from FG have been disappointed.

There are huge changes happening in the world economy at teh moment and ee need some important changes to state institutions over the next decade. Enda doesn’t seem to have the vision to recognise this, let alone help deliver it.

      1. Wayne Carr

They have done some good work, but we should be striving for the best we can achieve, not just being happy with what we have. Surely, being critical of Fine Gael is fair, as such.

  8. classter

Who do I vote for if I would prefer to retain property tax, water charges & USC?

I want a diverse income base for govt & I want them to invest this into public services & infrastructure.

I can’t be the only one.

    Or can I?

  9. some old queen

Which party do you trust to govern? The answer is none but if the choice is between FF who albeit it with a global economic crisis messed up big time and FG who administered the terms of the bailout with a disproportionate and callous emphasis on the poor and vulnerable.

As far as competency goes, I would take FF myself. Best of a bad lot but you would hope (and pray) that they have learned their mistakes. FG on the other hand appears to have learned nothing. They are straight down the line neo con big business and Kenny is a high handed clown who is just not up for the job.

Acting like a thug in debates by shouting other people down will not work. Neither will scare tactics. They had it all to play for and are losing the game. If the current poll trends continue, they will be the minor party in the next government.
