As opposed to be some scobe walking by and picking it up with the intention of selling it.

If the person claims a bike from the Gardaí they have to pay a large fee per day to a private company for storage. I’ve been in a station when a man was presented with a bill for €180. He said his bike wasn’t worth that much and left.

it looks like my bike, which was stolen a couple of years ago, it was a canyon
they broke into my flat and stole it, from those pictures it looks fairly wrecked now

Did you not see the story this week about a garda – who happens to be a cyclist – reclaiming a stolen bike worth €1k and getting it back to its owner, who was cycletouring and had two bikes stolen? And the prosecution (in the papers today) of someone in regard to a theft of a €3k Ironman bike? Plenty of gardaí do follow up bike thefts.
That said, there’s a severe need for a city centre specialist bicycle theft unit that would handle all bicycle thefts in Dublin, and indeed outside Dublin. The value of these thefts is so huge that they are excluded from the annual crime statistics, and this is the definitive gateway crime that leads kids into contact with very dodgy folk indeed and ruins many young lives.
They go into the same containers all the stolen cars, Motor Boat engines, Farm Machinery, etc etc…higher levels of surveillance in our Ports would be a start
