Hillary Clinton

RTÉ bias?

Pshaw!

The latest Wikileaks email release reveals reporters, editors and contributors not just advocating for Hillary Clinton but apparently colluding with the campaign.

Emails show Univision Chairman Haim Saban urging the Clinton campaign to hit Donald Trump harder over immigration, the New York Times giving the campaign veto power over which interview quotes could be used in a profile of the candidate, the Boston Globe trying to time a Clinton opinion piece to do the most good in New Hampshire and CNBC’s John Harwood urging Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta to watch out for then-GOP candidate Dr. Ben Carson.

The documents also show Democratic National Committee official and CNN contributor Donna Brazile tipping off the Clinton campaign to a potentially difficult CNN town-hall question on capital punishment during the Democratic Party primary season.

Mainstream media outlets are often accused of siding with Democratic Party candidates and policies, but evidence of active collaboration takes the concern to a new level.

There you go now.

That’s why I coined the term “lamestream media” in the early noughties. For this exact kind of thing.

      Wow, was that you?

“Maw, hey maw look, look who’s on the internet, the guy who coined some term, in the noughties, No I swear it’s them, I swear Maw. Aww Maww. I’ll clean it later Maw.”

      Any chance of a selfie?

Pretty sure. I just started saying it. It’s a great, great phrase. We’re going to make the media great again.

And? At the best they have something with the last one but none of the others are surprising. lots of outlets let people OK the final interview. so what?

God, I hate wikileaks. Basement dwellers thinking they are saving the world when their dumps (he) have endangered LGBT people and identified victims of sexual violence in the middle East. Keep up the good work.

Actually, that’s true. What this mostly proves is that Clinton has a better relationship with the media, which, given that she tends to behave like a professional and her opponent like an entitled vindictive boor, should hardly be surprising. I suppose from the point of view of someone whose candidate has utterly alienated and aggravated so many people in so many professions and at so many levels of society, it could easily look like collusion when Clinton and the media fail to act as if they’re engaged in a blood feud.

      1. Dόn Pídgéόní

Anyone who thinks trump isn’t part of the establishment is of course going to see this as collusion. But in a country where the media comes out for a particular party, much like in the UK, and where even Republican media has endorsed Hilary, I’m still left thinking so what? I thought there was a smoking gun here but I’ve yet to see it.

        1. Nigel

Me, too – arguably they give in a bit too easily on some stuff, but none of it seems out of line with the normal give and take vis-a-vis candidates and media in US presidential elections. All this proves is that Clinton is better at handling the media than Trump – so another way she is better than him at stuff. I wonder what we’d see in an equivalent leak from the Trumo side? That’d be the best way to judge, but Wikileaks isn’t fair and impartial in this.

Anyone who thinks Trump isn’t part of the establishment is an idiot and their views don’t count.

          1. Dόn Pídgéόní

You would hope but democracy innit. And I think the reasons some people support trump need be addressed – disenfranchisement, poverty, exclusion, poor education etc.

It’s those who are continuing to support him simply because he is the Republican candidate rather than supporting him as a potential leader which I find weirder.

  3. Nigel

Discouraging, but interesting to note that Trump’s clever strategy of constantly abusing and attacking the media really paid off for him. I suspect a lot of people will disapprove of this collusion, but sympathise with the people who took one look at Trump and decided to help out his opponent. Still, though. Not good.

Trump is living off the free publicity from the negative stories, so it’s working out well for everyone.

In fairness some of these go beyond bias and into a darker territory but for most people, its completely understandable why it would happen given the landscape.

it is amusing reading the comments on this compared to the earlier comments about RTE though.

People can be really very blind to their own biases.

    1. Bob

I think people would say the same here if it was a case of RTE siding with the lesser of two evils as opposed to always the party in power.

    2. forfeckssake

RTE is state funded. The media mentioned here are not.
RTE shows bias towards the people who control it’s funding. This is not the case above.
The newspapers mentioned above also openly endorse Hillary. RTE claims not to endorse any political party.

      They are very different.

  6. forfeckssake

Newspapers openly declare their endorsements for favoured candidates. None of them support Trump. This is their publicly stated position. There’s no surprise here except for the leak from a CNN reporter.

  7. ahjayzis

Hasn’t he openly threatened journalists on several occasions?

Obviously worrying, but I have far more of a problem with the fact that I have never once, not even once, seen a mainstream newscaster ask ANY American politician a tough question and not immediately back off at the first evasive non-answer.

    1. C Sharp

Yup, and he has apparently ramped it up last few days, with a CNN journalist having to be escorted to her car by Secret Service at a recent Trump event after he set the baying mob on the press area.

He threatens his opponent with prison and suggests nefarious violent activities to stop her SC appointments, the fourth estate are threatened with mob justice and dissenters in his own party with vengeance. Lovely fella.
