it really is an outrage, all they have been through. the executive has a duty to protect and encourage whistle blowers and they need to get a hell of a lot better at it.

    1. Sam

      Who’s going to make them?
If they keep this shambles of a govt together for another 12 months, will the voting public of 2018 be thinking about this scandal when they tick a box on the ballot?

Mary Harney said that the Irish public has a short memory.
So long as we keep proving that she was right, they won’t be too wary of pulling strokes like this again.

      1. jusayinlike

I won’t be ticking any box and I encourage anyone and everyone to join me, end this charade, drain the toxic swamp..

        1. Daddy

If you choose not to tick a box, then your opponent ticks one for you. Fine Gaelers always vote. The problem is the people who don’t vote and then complain.

Not voting is lazy and counter productive.

        2. rotide

We laugh at americans for voting in Trump and here’s proof that some of our own are as gullible as anyone on the planet , happily regurgitating phrases like Drain the Swamp while merrily pledging not to vote.

          1. mildred st. meadowlark

It’s a case of damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Not voting isn’t really an option, I feel, because there will always be people who believe in the system, so if you do vote, who do you vote for if you want realistic and achievable change, not the kind of extremism which is so prevalent in politics these days.

        3. ahjayzis

If everyone bar one person followed your lead and that one person re-elected this current government, then they’d still be the democratically elected government and you’d be the idiot who thought not speaking was a form of argument.

By all means don’t vote – 40% of people never vote. Doesn’t matter though, you’re invisible then.

          1. jusayinlike

En masse non vote equals charade over..
History has taught us that no matter what way you vote in the charade “selections” the bastards will always win..

        4. Daisy Chainsaw

If you don’t vote and you don’t get the result you want, then it’s your fault. When you see constituencies decided by a handful of votes, it’s proof that every vote is important.

          1. jusayinlike

Yes and thank you notice that all the major parties are infested with right wingers and then you get that sick feeling that the bastards have won again..

why bother taking part in the first place

          2. Kieran NYC

“why bother taking part in the first place”

Why bother us with your impotent online moaning then?

      1. jusayinlike

Naivety would be going through another “selection” process and expect a positive result and loads of positive change

        1. Rob_G

Your worldview is so narcissistic as to be breath-taking: the party or parties that you didn’t like didn’t win, so now you have decided that democracy doesn’t work.

          – genuinely can’t get over it…

  2. Brother Barnabas

Generally irritates me when people secure massive payouts from the state for various things. In this case, though, I really hope the McCabes do massively we€€ out of this. They deserve it, and the state deserves it.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

Award the McCabes the same as whatever it costs for the public enquiry to do their job. That way if the bill comes to millions, then they get compensated millions. And they’ll deserve every single cent of it and more.

          1. martco

I say give it to Columbo

It’s always the ex-made-for-TV-movie-actor that did it in the end and he always gets his man.

            That’s Kenny fupped so ;)

    1. realPolithicks

You’re absolutely right, and it needs to be carried out by somebody from outside the state. I wonder if there is some kind of EU organization that could take this on?

  3. louislefronde

Might I recommend some cops from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) given that in Ireland the usual gripes concerning police from England, Scotland and Wales will arise.

They might need some lessons in how to spot ‘Domestic Irish Spoofing’ however, though not entirely different from Domestic Canadian Spoofing, there are regional dissimilarities, if you get my meaning?

    1. seekingsusan

You’ll find if you do your research properly that most of the Canadian Police Force was made up of Irish RIC veterans from the last century. No doubt most of the modern day ones are descended from them and are related to at least one of people who will be investigated. Better to get over some Danish police,

          1. Brother Barnabas

You should add that to your sign:

            “Best Handjob in Town…

Then time to pillage my village”

(I suggest a winking emoji at the end)

          2. mildred st. meadowlark

            I’m seriously considering it…

            ‘The ride of your life’…
saw that on roller coaster once. I liked it.

  4. Friscondo

The East German Stasi at their worst were mere Boy Scouts compared to the evil scum that were out to destroy Maurice McCabe.

  5. martco

    here’s a question, serious

if per chance Columbo completes his investigations and yer wan the hubby and callinan and maybe someone from dept justice who knows are sent downtown…what IS the actual offence?

    Is it defamation?
    Perverting the course of justice?
    Treason?

    1. Shayna

“The crime of treason is defined by Article 39 of the Constitution of Ireland, adopted in 1937, which states:
treason shall consist only in levying war against the State, or assisting any State or person or inciting or conspiring with any person to levy war against the State, or attempting by force of arms or other violent means to overthrow the organs of government established by the Constitution, or taking part or being concerned in or inciting or conspiring with any person to make or to take part or be concerned in any such attempt.”
      (Wikipedia)
I would have thought that Columbo wouldn’t be charging anyone with Treason. Although the two former suggested charges, should apply!

      1. Shayna

Although, the bit at the end, “….or taking part or being concerned in or inciting or conspiring with any person to make or to take part or be concerned in any such attempt.” (To take down the Government). It’s technically, by law – Treason.

        1. Cian

I’d read “[…] make or to take part or be concerned in any such attempt.” as related to the previous part “levy war against the State, or attempting by force of arms or other violent means”. So “Treason” is violence-related overthrow of government or support of same.

  6. Anne

    Who’s “disgusting” now?

    Rotten to the core.

I see they’ve dropped the charges against the former head of the Garda Press Office, David Taylor who said he was instructed to run a smear campaign against McCabe and who said Nóirín O’Sullivan was involved. Ye can’t be throwing people under the bus who’ve too much dirt on ye now lads, can ye.

    O’Sullivan needs to go.

It’s outrageous what they’ve done to this man. I hope he takes them to the cleaners.

You have to think if they’re will to do this to one of their own, what have they been getting away doing to an ordinary Joe Soap?

There’s no accountability. Corrupt from the top down.

    1. rotide

While I won’t argue with your basic premise on what needs to happen to Norin, It’s ironic that it wasn’t long ago you were insisting that anyone accused of child abuse be locked up.

Where would Sgt McCabe be then.

      1. Anne

yeah let’s allow all the kiddy fiddlers access to children until they’ve been proven guilty coz like it’s a possibility the guards might be making it all up.. it that what you’re saying?

          1. Anne

Now what do you think Rotsey? Stop acting the idiot.

I would have said previously that access to children should be removed immediately from any suspected child abuser. Children need protecting immediately from any potential abuser.

Would you have your kids visit Jimmy Saville while you’re waiting on a trial date? Coz he’s innocent till proven guilty. No you don’t. You remove access immediately.

We shouldn’t need to have caveats to that, just in case the Gardai are on a smear capaign, making up the most serious of allegations, using their position of power to destroy a man’s reputation.

Therefore false allegations of the most serious of offences against children should be treated with the upmost gravity. I.e criminal prosecution and a custodial sentence.

What guard would submit these false allegations of his own accord?

            Disgusting.

  7. Anne

We know that the present Commissioner of An Garda Siochana has claimed in public to be supportive of us while seeking in private to discredit Maurice McCabe before the O’Higgins Commission..

    And

O’Sullivan personally instructed her lawyers to cast McCabe as the culprit, that he was making complaints in bad faith..

So long, farewell auf wiedersehen, adieu Adieu, adieu, to yieu and yieu and yieu.
    Buh bye Noirin.

      1. Anne

Oh right.. that’s why she’s “not doing the easy thing” and going, as she puts it.

She should stay the month and take the the government down with her.

    1. Brother Barnabas

o’sullivan should be gone by now – no waiting for her to decide she should or shouldn’t. no question of that. but I don’t believe she’s even primarily to blame. must be a fundamental overhaul of senior management within An GS.

        1. Brother Barnabas

shouldn’t be the end, but it will. o’sullivan will be the scapegoat to appease the plebs, with the next-in-line stepping forward, saying all the right things about lessons to be learned, before proceeding as was. and before too long o’sullivan will be back in another top-paying gig. and that’s how it’ll be until we stop it.

  8. Truth in the News

This requires a formal criminal investigation and not conducted by the Guards, all parties documenation
files and and computers need to be seized, there is a mass of material connected with politicians and the
media that requires attention, as certain sections of the media aided and abbeted the entire fiasco.
We need to establish if there exists a black operation unit specialising in disinformation embedded in
the Guards with years, too many coincidences have occured over the years that need investigation and
it predates even the arms trial and the later actions of Garvey…….who Guards the Guards
