People Before profit TD Brid Smith joined pro choice activists to launch her bill to reduce the punishment for women who procure abortions and doctors who assist them from 14 years to a fine of up to €1

Ms Smith said:

“I think I am right in saying that the vast majority of people in this country are not aware that if you procure an abortion in this country or help to procure an abortion you could face up to 14 years in prison. We think this is utterly draconian and barbaric,”

The bill well be debated in the dáil next week

Tis better to have dead women, restricted doctors and lies masquerading as advice than the right to choose.

It’s a pointless publicity stunt. It may only be €1 but it’s still a legal punishment. The government are going to drag their feet on the 8th until they fall or the Citizens’ Assembly comes back to them with something to think about for six months or so before finally agreeing to a referendum. This adds nothing to the debate.

I was being a smart-alec because I thought this was a typo. If it’s not a typo, I apologise to anyone I offended. I can’t imagine “fines of up to €1” is in the legislation, though.

Well, there you go. Again, no offence meant to anyone by my original comment, I was being a smart-ar$e.

I doubt think anyone would have taken offence… actually… this IS the internet so somebody’s probably foaming at the mouth somewhere.

I suppose it provides people with a safety net until Repeal happens. If order pills and collect them through Parcel Motel/AddressPal, or I book a ryanair flight for someone looking for an abortion, I’m aiding and abetting the procurement of an abortion and can be jailed for upto 14 years. Gail O’Rorke was charged for simply booking flights for a friend who wanted to go to Dignitas, so the precident is there, even if the situation differs.

I prefer my oyster lickers clean shaven, but once he isn’t too stubbly and does the job properly, I’m okay with it.
