A Limerick A Day

Members of the women’s national football team at a press conference in Liberty Hall yesterday

Some ladies are losing their poise
And making a shrill frightful noise
And letting it show
That none of them know
That soccer’s a game just for boys.

Meanwhile…

Good times.

Lets see how many comments are deleted on this post, if you don’t agree with BS’s narrative don’t bother posting.

Even attempting to disagree with what these ladies have highligted and why would be a serious reach, even for trolls

      * steps up *

Em….. anyone got a ‘what the boys get and what the girls get’ side by side comparison.

Then, throw in some match attendance figs and any TV viewing figs.

I ask because some fella was on Morning Ireland saying that the women are treated the same as the men. Some of the things that are the same include, hotels and the complaint about wifi affects everyone including the lads team and the staff.

I heard him say the kit / training gear issue has been sorted.

Again, a like for like comparison is the only way anyone can see the issues as not all the complaints yesterday were not exclusive to the women apparently.

So, before anyone throws a fit and takes the ball home, I’m only askin’ for a like for like comparison.

      1. andydufresne2010

So you should get changed in the bog and share tracksuits because you don’t get the viewing figures?

But if some fella says it’s sorted I’m happy enough

          1. andydufresne2010

            You implied it.
“Then, throw in some match attendance figs and any TV viewing figs” implies that if they don’t get the viewing figures, do they really deserve conditions equal to those who do. It just so happens that the conditions they are dealing with are less than basic. So much so that they had to have a bloody press conference to highlight them.

I hate that. “I didn’t say that”. That doesn’t let you off the hook. If you imply something. You’ve said it.

          2. Clampers Outside

No. you inferred something from what I wrote. And did so intentionally. Why should I rise to your intended provocation, when it’s clearly just you avoiding the question asked.

            (That’s rhetorical btw)

      2. mildred st. meadowlark

Clamps, I’m not in the mood to do this with you today, I had no sleep and there’s a passing chance it might rain AND neither me not Andyourpointiswhatexactly? can get out of the office for cocktails.

So, if you wish to look at this on a side-by-side basis, should we not also look at the history of the two as well?

How long has the Irish team been in existence? Was it solely for men in the beginning, or was there a woman’s team too?

Have the women’s football team been given an equal opportunity to promote their sport, as the men’s team have been given? Have they been given the opportunity to promote and build up a following in the way that the men’s team have?

Does a smaller crowd of spectators mean that the skill and dedication of these athletes is not as valid as the men’s? Does it mean that they are less entitled to the kind of equipment and treatment that the men recieve, despite the fact that these women are sports professionals?

        1. mildred st. meadowlark

I should add the first part of my comment is said in jest. Upon rereading, I come across as a grumpy cow. Apologies

          1. Clampers Outside

Great stuff Milly. All good questions.

Asking questions isn’t hurtful, but the reaction from some you’d swear it was.

The only reason I mention smaller crows is that smaller crowds, in attendance or viewing, means less money coming in.

( Please note, I am in no way suggesting that a sport, still in its early growth, should be held to that stringently, and that a sport in growth needs additional support to get it to a point of self sufficiency, and that can take years )

          2. Sheik Yahbouti

I did not discern any grumpiness in your comment, Mildred. It seemed entirely reasonable to me. I was actually dreading Clampers’ arrival.

        2. Nigel

If a men’s team came out with a reasonable set of demands would they be assessed on their merits or would it be entirely dependant on a strict comparative audit with the women’s team?

          1. Clampers Outside

Nigel, yes, if the women’s team had the vast. vast majority following and viewing, then yes, the men’s would have to be compared, to see if the demands are reasonable.
Remember, I never said the demands were unreasonable, I said that some of the demands were things the men and staff also experience, and so a comparison would show what the demands they actually are making.

As stated, I asked for clarification o that, nothing more, but of course, you got offended on behalf of woman kind for me asking a question you dont like.
And you then throw in “what if the men’s….blah, blah” nonsense, without addressing the question…. wtf…

I think living in Nigelland would be great. All one would have to do is complain about something and Nigel would accommodate the fix without question…. I’m sure Nigelland would be bankrupt in no time though.

            – – –
On merit… one only gets to the top in sport on ability, or merit, not who ya know or any affirmative action measure.
Yes Nigel, they should be assessed on merit. Sport is as pure a merit based rewards system as you can get.

        3. Nigel

So? How the feck is that side of the game going to develop without proper funding and support? If it’s as bad as you claim then it needs more funding and support not less.

        4. Topsy

Mildred. It’s as simple as this. All women’s sport is poo. Period. From team to individual sports.

      3. Custo

Isn’t this the opposite of your stance on women’s rugby not getting a wall chart published in the indo?

      4. Ratatattat

        Tedious attention seeking troll.

And you did promise to behave better last week yet here you are at it again. mani’s ghost was right

        1. Clampers Outside

What has this to do with that thing I’m not too mention? It has to do with football and the treatment of the team. But hey, you go and make it about that other thing, if it floats your boat.

      1. andydufresne2010

My original comment was that attempting to disagree with what these ladies have highlighted and why would be a serious reach. You stepped up. Well done.

        1. Clampers Outside

I used a phrase, for fun.

What I did was ask a question. I didn’t disagree with anyone. But hey, you seem to read whatever you want into what people write anyway. Nigel does that too in fairness, but he’s not anyway near as bad as he used to be.

  3. mildred st. meadowlark

You see, that’s why I’m asking those questions. I’m not really big into football.

But it seems that if the women’s team is consistently underfunded, given less investment (they don’t even have a fixed goalkeeper coach apparently), less opportunity, less promotion then they are facing an uphill battle.

Men’s football is an established sport, whereas women have had to fight for their recognition. If they are treated as a second-class team, then they will consistently be on the back foot and will never be able to achieve the kind of skill and technique that the men do.

  4. andydufresne2010

I don’t find questions hurtful (I wasn’t talking about you, etc..). I just naively thought that this particular topic was very clear cut. Their lack of basic amenities seemed (to me) beyond questioning. I was clearly wrong. There will always be those who choose to question everything.

I’m happy to just believe that they were right to hold the press conference and highlight the issues and embarrass a few people who should be embarrassed.

    1. Clampers Outside

I didn’t question everything, I asked for clarification of the claims, which are not exclusive to the women as per the radio interview on Morning Ireland.

      It’s simple really.

Do you live in Nigelland where no one questions anything and complaints are answered without looking into them…. hmmmmm the FAI would be dead in a year with you and Nigel running the show if ye dont like asking for clarification on any matters. Again, it’s really that simple.

          1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I dunno. Have you been serviced properly?

            *sniggers, delighted with self*

          2. Nigel

Peak Mildred is the mountain where we put the flying chocolate skateboard park. The ramp is twenty miles long and if you haven’t eaten your board by halfway you’re doing it wrong.

  5. Joe cool

It reflects bad on the fai as an association. But as we know it’s not the 1st not last we’ll hear of it. The penny pinching and looking after the blazers has gone on since the beginning. Your face doesn’t fit or your daddy didn’t give you the job, you’re gone. Roy Keane highlighted this. But don’t worry Delaney wants a UEFA job….which will bring his wages to 450k a year

  6. Gorev Mahagut

When you have “football” and “ladies football”, there is clearly a gender bias at work. Why not change the name “FIFA World Cup” to “FIFA Mens World Cup”?

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

I agree. Why can’t everyone adopt the correct sporting terminology used in Olympic competition; Ladies 400m, Men’s Hockey etc.
Also, it aint ‘football’ it’s soccer!

      1. Clampers Outside

Ooooohhh… get over yourself ya muppet and stop taking everything literally ffs.
Are you really that much removed from anything subtle or nuanced that you have to read everything as a direct and literal meaning.

        (That’s rhetorical too)

        1. andydufresne2010

Well I hope you get the clarification you want in the coming days and I hope that you satisfy yourself that these ladies’ grievances are genuine and I hope they’re acted on and they get what they need. Debating you has been a great pain in my balls this morning Clampers. I always thought you were very fair but you called me a muppet and that has added to my hangover grumps. So up your butt with a coconut.

          *steps down*

          1. Clampers Outside

” hope they’re acted on and they get what they need. ” – everyone does, I’m sure.

All I did is, I asked for a clarification to know which are the grievances specific to the women, and which are the stuff everyone in the FAI puts up with, as noted by the FAI on the radio this morning.

            We didn’t debate at all.

A coconut won’t fit up me butt.
I’ll step down now too. Peace out

Sorry for calling you a muppet, I thought you were being obtuse.

          2. Sheik Yahbouti

The major grievances were clearly set out in many reports , Clampers. You are fooling no-one with your quest for “clarification”.

          3. Clampers Outside

Any links to these many reports, so many that I have missed as you say….

No one is linking to these reports that I’ve looked at so far, so how could I know them in fairness…
BS didn’t link to any…. none on RTE.ie that I’ve seen … and nothing linked to on the Indo story above… and I just looked at three Irish Times pieces on this exact story, and no links to any report in those…..

Do you have a link to these “many reports” you can share, thanks.

      1. Sheik Yahbouti

And he has the cheek to ‘plus one’ a post saying this is ‘boring’ – having killed off the thread in the usual fashion. Oy Vay.

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

I don’t know why you’re expecting civilised and rational behaviour from that cartoon.

  7. Holden MaGroin

They look pissed off. Like you didn’t text me when you were out with the lads last night pissed off.
