You Want Experts?

They’ve got experts.

Further to Wednesday’s Eighth Amendment shenanigans.

Gorugeen writes:

Look who I found on the back page of ‘Alive’. Senator [Rónán] Mullen’s experts that agree with him. He should march the whole committee [Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution] down to the Aisling hotel…for balance.

I don’t think this is the route pro-life groups should go down. It’s always fair enough to question orthodoxy, but the acceptability of abortion is not “proved or disproved” by a potential link to higher rates of breast cancer or mental illness. If that were the case, smoking and other surgical procedures would could/should be made illegal or restricted further.

Shure go on. Why dont you perauade them of your ways? You’re getting no where persuading the pro-choicers to change their mind. Why not go and tell the anti.s what to do?

Would the start of their pregnancy consultation begin with a prayer to the virgin mary??
Or as it’s in knock, would they have to stare at the sun for a few minutes?

I always read it when it drops through my letter box. It’s mighty entertaining stuff in there.

If abortion can be linked to breast cancer, that means women who’ve had miscarriages are at risk too because a medical abortion is no different to a miscarriage. You don’t have to have been pregnant, to have had a D&C either, so that can’t be a factor. Still, it’s expected of the nasty tactics used by antichoice propagandists.

At €20 a head there’s obviously money to be made on the “prolife” circuit. No wonder “ex abortionists” jump at the chance!

Hmm.. I think the ‘argument’ is based on
      1. having children decreases your risk of certain cancers
      2. having an abortion decreases your chance of having children
therefor having an abortion increases your risk of certain cancers.

    2. Topsy

Don’t know if abortion can be linked to breast cancer, but I do know as a fact, (irrefutable) that’s it’s liked
to the death of a child.

      1. GoddessDurga

Unusual. The vast, vast majority of abortions are linked to the clearing-out of a bunch of cells.

Virtually all late abortions are a result of the discovery that the foetus will inevitably die at birth or will have a weeks-long life of agony.

But unless you have a dog in this fight – unless you’re a woman of childbearing age – I personally don’t think it’s any of your or my business or that we should have any vote on this matter.

Pro lifers being pro-life. Neither side is going to miss the chance of making a bit of money from the referendum, Sure why not indeed, where there is emotion there is cash to be made. Amnesty is doing pretty well out of it too. Used to be a time when they were concerned with prisoners of conscience (Ibrahim and the Brotherhood), but thats an expense- now they have to follow the funding like so many other charities. What gets funded gets heard.

It’s News. My name is News.

If you’re going to become obsessed with me, please get it right.

Prolifers being prolife and pro lie. As the committee on the 8th amendment is demonstrating, antichoicers hate the truth and the reality of women’s healthcare needs. Doctors with experience of women, their pregnancies and health complications giving evidence while Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dumber fester angrily in the corner, unable to question them on important antichoice topics like glosios, oxytocin as an amnesiac, and abortion giving you breast cancer.

      1. Milo

I agree. Its a very messy debate already. All I was pointing out is that people will use the occasion to make money. Others will use it to further their own profiles (not profiles). Just in case they run for President or something. I am pro choice, but it doesn’t mean I can’t be objective about how the players use the campaign to row their own canoe.

        1. Nigel

So progressive people, politicians and organisations support progressive causes, thereby showing that they are progressive. This is shocking and someone must be told.

          1. Milo

Your adoration of progress is cute but misinformed and gauche. Wiping the mammoth and the buffalo out with progressive hunting methods wiped them out. Screening for down syndrome in Iceland to wipe them out is considered progressive. Living longer to the point that we overpopulate the planet with non productive workers is progressive. Using the earth to provide energy was considered progressive oil climate change. I think you could be more selective in what you call progress. In any case, I am just pointing out the people who further their own cause by bandwagoning on a a popular campaign. You wouldn’t be one of those would you??

          2. Nigel

I am quite selective about what I consider liberal progressive policies, thanks, as opposed to the general progression of civilisation since the Stone Age, for good or ill. As for the campaign, it’s still a bit of a tautology to say that people who support this stuff support this stuff, whether you class it a bandwagon or not. Cynicism can be as stupid as naivete, and as easily exploited.

          3. Nigel

A decent social safety net, a functioning national health service and sustainable agricultural and energy policies to combat climate change. For a start.

          4. Milo

Fine. No problem with any of those. Im just wondering what the definition of progress is in that context. Many people start initiatives with the best of intentions, only to discover its actually a backward step. Like developing a national health service…

          5. Nigel

Yes, well, warn me about the people who start initiatives with the worst of intentions, they’re the ones to really watch out for.

          6. Milo

So no definition of progressive then? One of these things that you’ll know when you see it? Whatever liberals decide it is? I dont think the word suits the causes you espouse. But then again its your word.

          7. Nigel

Meh, I’m easy. Whaddaya want, fixed inflexible doctrinaire radicals cleaving to a rigid ideology?

  5. Yeah, Ok

Can someone give me an idiot’s guide to why they link abortion to breast cancer? I’m no expert in female anatomy (heh heh heh) but the lady bits are a fair old ways away from the booby bits, no? What’s the story there?

    1. Niamh

No link, it just spooks people. At school they told us the pill caused breast cancer. Just…because. Don’t take the pill, like a good girl.

      1. Yeah, Ok

Yeah but they’re “doctors”, surely they’re trotting out some kind of medical evidence (such as it is) for this. They can’t just say “x causes y because we say so”; that’s not how science works, even pseudoscience. In order for their fellow wackos to use their claims surely there’s SOME kind of hypothesis they’re working off?

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

One test done on rats showed an elevated instance in breast cancer. Several other tests over the course of many years have shown no such link or causation, but naturally the antichoice cohort would rather focus on one narrow test than the many others that disprove it outright.

Why should I listen to other women’s opinion? It’s been established and enshrined in law that women are incapable of rational decision making. Why and how are these two different? Is their anatomy peculiar?
I would like to see us, women, constitutionally barred from parenting as mentally vulnerable, it’s not safe for the children of men. Protect the children!

What a fupping circus. Happy Friday the 13th, folks :-)

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

Once we’re found pregnant we need to be locked up for our own safety and given menial jobs to do to keep us occupied (a little light laundry work, for example.). When our precious cargo is safely delivered, it needs to be given straight to our infinitely more responsible husbands to raise properly. Women will be expected to continue with a few menial tasks like cooking, cleaning, feeding, bathing of the child etc in order to assist her husband in his role of parent.

      Blessed be the fruit!
