He was only 100 years behind Jan Hus who spread much the same message and was burned at the stake for it.
2 things:
1) Gutenberg’s printing press made it possible to spread his message far and wide before anything could be done about it.
2) Political will of German princes who were dissatisfied with the failings of the church shielded him.
Much is vested in the individual but often times its the circumstances that provide the platform.
