The boy wonder Harris is introducing legislation n that cannot be applied. Close hospitals if they don’t perform? Where would the patients be accommodated?
Fine them ? So a publically funded hospital gets fined and pays the fine out of – public funds, to the public funds coffer.
The real issue here is the licensing aspect. Now why specifically a license? Are the private hospitals not currently required to be of particular standards anyway? The public ones employ management that don’t seem to be answerable to anyone.
Or is it another step closer to an American style health service?.
Sheik Yahbouti
Yes.
Elizabeth Mainwaring
Bunty Phipps, who was an early investor in the Ballybough Rejuvenation and Monkey Gland Clinic, tells me that private hospitals in Ireland are not required to be of any standard.
some old queen
Davis flip flop. He was clearly playing to the gallery. I suppose the EU has a number of reasons for getting tough on this one. If the British renege on this deal then it doesn’t look good for the next phase. Then there is the fact that the Irish agreement suits the EU because it frames phase two as a soft exit.
The one to watch here is Labour. Just yesterday Corbyn said there should be more time. The longer this chaos continues, the more they will inch towards some sort of a remain position.
Frilly Keane

Finally, someone in the media wakes up to the farce of the bail laws in Ireland.
Jools
Yeah, thank god for the pearl clutching, fake moral outrage Paddy Daily Mail. Get a grip.
Andyourpointiswhatexactly?
Mr Andy gets VERY worked up about this: he deals with bail applications a lot. Farcical is the correct word.
Brother Barnabas
Oh dear… he sounds like an awful bore. Is he? Droning on and on about work, completely oblivious to your womanly needs. Poor you. I would never be so insensitive.
Taunton
300,000 crimes committed by people on bail. Many with hundreds of convictions. Such a waste of court time and a strain of police resources. At what point does our justice system say enough, off to jail for an extended period with you.
Nigel
Probably when our jails are less overcrowded? Paradoxically.
GiggidyGoo
Let’s license the prisons as well as the hospitals. That’s bound to solve something or other. Let’s also licence people sleeping rough.

‘Pension crisis: everyone must put 10% of wages into pension pot’
That’s all well & good but when people are paying 50% of their wages in rent it’s not going to happen… the property market needs a huge injection of social & affordable housing to avoid things like a pension crisis.
You can’t continually serve one section of society – landlords without the rest of us having to pay for it long-term. We’re going to have old age pensioners, who never got on the property ladder, who won’t have any asset to pay for a nursing home, who won’t be able to afford rents when they’re no longer working, never mind saving for a pension.
Killian G
As usual, you are dead right Anne.
This is a really interesting article. It’s couple years old but still holds.
The main point is that “the net worth of homeowners over time has significantly outpaced that of renters, who tend as a group to accumulate little if any wealth.”
Renters (of which I am one) are in a very precarious situation. \if you are not on the property ladder with a good chance of clearing your mortgage by the age of say 60, you are likely in trouble.
anne
I’ll have a read thanks… I’ll just put in 5 – 10 mins work n I’ll be due a break :)
Harry Molloy
I have to work much longer that 5 or 10 minutes before I take a break Anne
Killian G
Your either in the wrong job or you need to start using your mouth as well.
anne
I see you commenting every 2 minutes sometimes Harold, you big spoofer.
Warden of the Snort
I don’t know Killian it sounds a bit like more of the elitist middle class aspirational myth
The key to me is to strengthen the law around habitation standards and maximum costs and move it away from the primacy of private property. A law like this could be passed tomorrow if someone had the balls to bring it through the Dáil
Taunton
If you are paying 50% of your wage on accommodation, then you cannot afford your accommodation.

I always feel slightly troubled about Saoirse, there’s something not quite right behind the act. It’s almost like by trying to not give anything away she reveals everything.
saoirse rules
You are just jealous that she is talented and you are not, Jools . Simple as and sad that you are so bothered that she is not out behaving like the town screecher.
Jools
I just think fame sits very uneasily on her. Don’t get me wrong, I think she is a fine actor, a huge talent, but there is something going on behind the mask that I find troubling.
Killian G
What do you mean “behind the act” and “behind the mask”? Do you know her personally? Does she behave very differently in private?? So the public act is just a big con, is it?
Would you ever give over and shut your mouth? We are talking about a young woman who is doing very well for herself and to me seems content and balanced. What harm is she doing to you? None. It’s kind of weird that you even give her any thought. Go and get a life for yourself.
anne
She’s an actor..anything else is none of your business.
You’re judgement of her speaks more about yourself than her.

+1 come back to us Jools when you are as talented as Saoirse.

I heard she was in a cult! They worship coleslaw, apparently. Joking aside, maybe there’s nothing going on and maybe it IS just me being jealous of her talent and success. Maybe it’s my institutionalised sexism doing the talking… begrudging a brilliant young woman’s talent and hard-earned success. I don’t do it about Domhnaill Gleeson … and maybe I should get a life … I’m sorry if I offended anyone, it must be awful having to to be in the public eye in order to follow your life’s passion, and suffer the weirdly placed guff that half the dregs of humanity fire at you from anonymous internet identities.
