SF’s Pearse Doherty repeating Michelle O’Neill’s statement, almost word for word, in the Dáil chamber. “The DUP collapsed the process.” He wants both the DUP, and Fianna Fáil, to consider their positions – having a go at Martin’s perceived “two problem parties” line

Doherty: “We’re crystal clear in SF on [what happens next], Tánaiste – direct rule is not an option.” Quotes from Varadkar and Coveney, wants that position again made clear to the UK Govt

Coveney says neither government, nor SF, were expecting the DUP statement yesterday. “The basis of a deal was there,” he says. “Some of the commentary has been unhelpful this morning, especially from the Fianna Fáil leader…” all politics is local, particularly to Cork SC

“We have made it clear to the British government, in the right and appropriate way, that a move to direct rule is not where we want to be “- says the same is true of UK, and probably of the DUP. Wants to get talks back going again.

“Any alternative to that is bad news for everybody,” he says. Doherty welcomes Coveney’s clear indication against direct rule. Coveney said the accommodation offered last Friday would not have made the Irish language “a threat to anybody”, with nothing being forced on anyone else

I have a (probably paranoid conspiracy) theory about what’s going on here. What if, as part of their deal with the Tories, the DUP has been tasked by Theresa May with keeping the North destabilised for the duration of the Brexit transition by preventing a government from forming? This is to prevent the Shinners calling a border poll (or otherwise being a nuisance) while they’re trying to get Brexit through. A NI border poll at this stage, while more than likely to fail, would shake a lot of people’s confidence and might create enough public disapproval to make them have to put Brexit on hold.
you are less paranoid than you think. direct rule from westminster makes things much handier to control for the tories.
Any news about the Scottish government?
About as relevant to my day to day life.
Norn iron. A mystery box of religious waffling.
and of your causing. Who signed the treaty?
I signed nothing. I was at home all day.
I also have a (probably paranoid conspiracy) theory that Arlene ‘Kelly’ Foster has requested direct rule so that the UK Gov can take the reigns for a short period of time and push through unpalatable issues such as same-sex marriage and an Ácht Gaeilge so Arlene can turn to her constituents and say ‘Wasn’t me!’.
This will never happen, not while the DUP are propping up the Tory government.
Why do people insist on using twitter to convey news like, have a tweet with a link to an article with all details not multiple tweets
It’s better that a deal wasn’t done. How could a NI assembly work with the DUP holding up the government in Westminster. It also show how troglodytic the DUP are, refusing to engage with culture or countenance a same-sex marriage bill. Not to mention the renewable heat scandal.
This is obviously just a pun but which is more important, winning a battle or a war? The Irish language is an issue to some but a hard border is way more important to most and SF has a golden opportunity to reach out to pro EU unionists right now.
It is time they stopped fighting with the DUP because they’ll never change so instead, figure out how to get around them. Brexit is way too important an issue to allow the DUP subvert the will of the people of NI. Move on because there is much bigger fish to fry.
The DUP are doing what they were paid £420,000 by shadowy international groups to do, which is in contradiction to the will of the majority in the North (both flavours). They are getting used to being tipped-toed around in Westminster and every time I hear Jeffery Donaldson in the news his accent is morphing from soft rural Co. Down to a full-on Jacob Rees-Mogg parody…he has literally lost the ability to pronounce the letter ‘R’ since the election. Noven Aawhlind.
…shadowy international groups giving donations to local groups…nah…too outlandish…
