One of the new 55m Luas trams on O’Connell Bridge, Dublin last week

Justin McCarthy, of RTE, reports:

The Dáil has been told that passengers taking the new Luas Cross City line at rush hour would be “quicker walking” because of congestion in Dublin city centre.

The claim was made by Fianna Fáil’s transport spokesman Robert Troy.

He said he took the Cross City line from Dawson Street to O’Connell Street this morning “in order to experience for myself the length of time”.

“It took 20 minutes, I would have been quicker walking,” he said.

“Coming back I took a taxi in order to be here for Question Time. [It took] 25 minutes.

      Two words
Dunloghaire nightmare brought to you by Owen Keegan the same man who has screwed up Dublin
Wait until shoppers no longer shop in the city centre due to the hassle
      Who will pay the rates

ah ye well for him so in his fancy taxis. Sure what would we need the metro north for or any other public transport? Can’t everyone get a garda escort to their flights for Paddys day junkets.

I find that hard to believe.
Robert Troy, a Fianna Fail TD wouldn’t be telling pork pies would he?
I took that exact same journey on Tuesday and it took less than 10 minutes..
Obviously we know there are problems and congestion but please don’t exaggerate.

Agreed. Surely the tech is in the tram to state exactly how long it took between stops. These figures would tell a lot.

It’s a disgrace. He should get on to Dublin City Council and get them to sort it out.

Now, who is running DCC again? Sinn Fein and the Greens!

I travel the same route every day, and after work (between 17 and 18:00) it takes the Luas 15-20 minutes from Stephen’s Green to Dominic Street. The same distance by foot, during the same time of the day, takes between 30 and 35 minutes. So on average I save 15 minutes. I wish I could walk as fast as Mr. Troy…

Exactly, it’s just the usual wind-bags playing party politics and trying to score a point whenever they can.

It’s the bus journey times which have suffered. I work near Stephen’s Green and have taken to get off at the Four Courts to walk now as the bus takes too long to get through the quays and through D’Olier Street/College green.

If he had no car or the cost of a taxi and was caught in 70mph winds and horizontal hail-stones I’m sure he’d gladly dive into the luas or leave earlier to avoid being late until it works better.

The system is a work in progress as usual because the pre-planning and timing appears to be almost non-existant but according to the guvrnor’s they are trying to remove as many cars, taxi’s and more bus routes from getting clogged up in the same area.

“Hmmm… I wonder what will happen if I do this?…. oh.. jayzus no !” – Irish minister for planning, vision and progressive futurism.
