Web Summit CEO Paddy Cosgrave, rebranded logo on twitter and tweet from journalist Philip O’Connor

Paddy Cosgrave has withdrawn his invitation for French far right politician Marine Le Pen to speak at his Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, in November.

In a series of tweets, he explained having Ms Le Pen at the event would be “disrespectful” to “our host country”.

Last night, he wrote a blog post defending his decision to invite her, saying

“…the easy decision for Web Summit is to shirk robust debate with those who hold extreme views of this nature. The easy decision for Web Summit is to rescind Marine Le Pen’s invitation.

“But for now we have chosen not to because we believe banning or attempting to ignore these views, which have been fanned in our view by technology, does little to furthering understanding.”

This afternoon, he tweeted the following…

Nice work, brah.

…like her father before her she is rabidly anti-semitic but in common with most alt-right she is pro-zionist…

Free speech must have threatened to cost him a fortune in unsold tickets and cancelled speakers.

      In one.
These ” liberal ” techies are just as narrow-minded,conventional and money-grabbing as old-school capitalists.
Why not let her have her say and then robustly challenge it instead of organising a self-pleasuring echo-chamber.

      1. Wellness

This is just a PR stunt by Paddy. Send out the invitation , gauge the reaction and then rescind under the umbrella ” hate V freedom of expression blah blah “.

      2. Nigel

Aw Well now you have a whole new sense of grievance to nurse cos nobody wants to listen to your crappy ideas.

      3. Brother Barnabas

go on with your “self-pleasuring echo chamber”, charger

that’s just a standard garden shed

They’re worse. And the “too big to fail”, “too big not to use them” argument applies

        Try this:

Facebook exec: media firms that don’t work with us will end up ‘in hospice’

        And they’re watching….

Are you ready? Here is all the data Facebook and Google have on you

Little brother is far more sinister than Big Brother.

Huh. Guess we aren’t obliged to tolerate the intolerable after all. Funnily enough i find this craven capitulation makes me respect him even less. The whole thing was just cynical and opportunistic.

  3. Dr_Chimp

He really should have known better. Freedom of expression, rigorous debate & robust dialogue do not mix well with techies.

Don’t know about you but I despise anyone who hates another just by virtue of their race, gender, orientation, religion and so on.

Anyway, went to this web summit thingy a few years back when it was in the RDS.

Pointless onanism would be a good way to put it – and I work in the IT industry. Tw@ts like Cosgrave are shameless self promoters and carpetbaggers, nothing more.

Seriously chaps, there really is nothing to see here.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Cosgrave is an events organiser now, no? I certainly wouldn’t be considering him a techy anymore… not that I ever knew of his techy background…

Would I be alone in that…. I’d have thought not.

That wasn’t a snipe a Paddy, it was aimed all who turn a blind eye to, and sometimes justify the Antisemitism present in lefty politics but get very excited when some like MLP is given a platform.

Frankly I think Paddy is a twit, I can’t see how he is called an entrepreneur or a techy, he doesn’t do either anymore.

        1. Not Pancho

Where do you see anti-semitism in lefty politics? By which I mean, where do you see it yourself, not where do you see it where other people claim to have seen it?

seriously broadsheet, ye really have to adopt a more zen-like approach to paddy cosgrave. this muppet is just not worth your time or consideration – it only brings out the worst in yourselves and the commentariat.
yes, yes, we know he has his own web summit and he has more friends than you but you’ll always be mummy’s special little soldier.
can we move on now please?

    1. Spaghetti Hoop

Absolutely. Paddy’s Faro and away from us now – let him court the Portuguese press. We’ve all wasted too much time on this story/non-story.

  5. Dhod

I was sat at the table next to his in Bunsen recently. He was with a wide eyed younger guy who really seemed to admire paddy. The funniest part was that the young fella was dressed identically to PG – navy Aran jumper, blue jeans and big ugly asics

  6. Jésus María Josépha

Web Summit a platform for rigorous debate and robust dialogue? Is this some kind of comedy improv?

“The issue of hate, freedom of expression and platform technologies is one of the defining questions of 2018.”

Great – invite the management from Facebook Dublin so.

I’ve been to this event. If you want herd mentality exemplified, forget the Phoenix Park and Pope Skoda – head to Portugal.

  7. Termagant

Imagine being such a colossal doo-doo head that you invite people whose ideas you literally disagree with to engage in discourse and discussion. Mental.

    1. scottser

see, this is what happens when you don’t pay people:
PC: ‘ Can someone get me a pen?’
Intern: ‘I have her flight booked already boss’..

  8. realPolithicks

“In a series of tweets, he explained having Ms Le Pen at the event would be “disrespectful” to “our host country”.”

Why was she invited in the first place then?

      1. realPolithicks

Negative publicity you would assume, although perhaps it’s true that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

  9. Peter Dempsey

People like Jane Ruffino and Sabrina Dent are going mad about this.
“I just… I don’t even want to look but can we just start screeching at the people sponsoring this toxic waste dump? Because he’s only gotten worse and this is going nowhere.”
