Ollie’s started being nice about the Church so they’ve reached the stage of being used by edgelords to get a rise out of people. Soon the alt-right will be joining the priesthood to own the libs. Nobody will notice the difference.

Do you think coverage of these vestments (which are hideous btw) in the media is pushing out coverage of child sex abuse and cover up by the church?

It’s all pr deflection. Kids and seminarians are being sexually assaulted and abused by priests, it’s being covered up by the heirarchy, thousands of Irish clerical abuse victims are being short changed because the church won’t pay its share of reparations, but never mind! Andrea Bocelli is singing a couple of songs and the Vatican Rose has some fancy dresses to show off to the flock.

          They’re not fancy.

I’m surprised you are aware of all of the things you mentioned, given they are being drowned out in the media.

Coverage of this visit seems to fall into 3 categories – ‘sure it’s grand’, ‘this is definitely not grand’, or RTE-style reports of the visit that may mention there’ve been protests or that the visit is controversial.

So all the ‘it’s grand’ pieces feel like puff PR for the church, and whether intended to or not, act to negate the ‘there’s no fupping way this is grand’ pieces.

‘If you have only 1 dollar left, spend it on PR’

Why should reports of events ordinarily fall into any category of grand/not grand, for/against? The Examiner report, for example, was reporting on what vestments and liturgical gear would be used at the event. Other reports deal with other issues.

Good cartoon. I imagine Jesus is furious, if it’s possible for Jesus to be furious, at the filth in his church.

I’m not sure why you’d think that Brother.

I’m reminded of a story about Napolean telling a cardinal envoy of the pope that he was going to destroy the church. The cardinal replied:
“Your majesty, we, the Catholic clergy, have done our best to destroy the church for the last 1,800 years. We have not succeeded, and neither will you.”

It is a daily praise Jesus miracle that the church survives at all. But it always will.

          fair enough

personally i couldn’t square all that’s going on with continued participation

can’t you have a relationship with christ without engagement with the church?

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

there are other Christian options that will allow you to think a little more for yourself maybe even bringing you closer to your Jesus

The bits of the Roman Catholic church that are unique to the RC church[1] are all man-made. You can belong to any of the Christian churches and be true to Christ.

[1] including, but not limited to: the veneration of Mary, canon law, the sacraments, transubstantiation, mass, covering up kiddie-fiddlers, wearing dresses, papal authority, etc.

One of his churches (which seems to be always featuring more heavily in the abuse of power stakes)… I’m a bit crap at deism but I think JC features in a few Christian religions?

      1. Cian

I suppose, by definition, he features in ALL Christian religions.

He also has a cameo role in some other non-Christian religions.
