Further to last night’s criticism by journalist Vincentt Browne of RTÉ’s live coverage of the visit of Pope Francis to Ireland.
Martha writes:
Take a bow Aine Lawlor, Joe Duffy, Mary Kennedy, Caitriona Perry, Marty Morrissey, Marty Whelan, etc, etc. I strongly agree with Vincent Browne’s sentiment concerning RTÉ and its fawning running commentary on the Pope’s visit. I speak as a practising Catholic and involved in television and can only see this massively backfiring…The reverential tone throughout by professional journalists was embarrassingly child-like…and often unintentionally funny…

Leave Marty Whelan out of this!
Agreed;
Leave Marty Whelan out of this – and everything else – ever.
I try to be positive towards RTE where possible; and in this case the technical aspects of the coverage were very impressive. It’s not an easy gig and with everything being done on once-off basis there’s plenty of opportunity for things to go wrong.
But beyond that, Aine Lawlor’s behaviour and commentary was sickeningly craven and sycophantic.
It’s one thing to be respectful towards a co-presenter or guests but to be so utterly deferential at every turn was nauseating. Is she hoping for one of those special papal awards that are handed out to those who render “special service” to the church?
The general death spiral and irrelevence of RTE to the viewing public is highlighted by the formulaic coverage of this event. They confiscate our money to produce this wall to wall dross.
It’s times like this im glad i never have and never will pay a TV “license”
I’ve always though a comapny could make a killing in Ireland by offering TV’s that can only receive a signal from say, a satellite dish/ or tv over IP, as from my reading of the the law your TV needs to be “capable of receiving a tv signal” now if it wasnt capable of that on its own, similar to a computer monitor it wouldnt require a “license”
i digress however….I didnt watch any of the coverage…any decent bloopers i should look up on youtube? any wardrobe malfunctions? pope related nip slips?
You’re brilliant, I wager you don’t own a house either.

There was some real insight. ‘Look at the plane the pope is on. It is a very big plane. ‘
I really enjoyed the interview with the “Grandson of a Knock Visionary” who by chance also ran the gift shop.
There’s an old saying:
“Don’t Knock a visionary who runs a gift shop in the mouth”
