Gavin Duffy says he has re-mortgaged his home to raise up to €750,000 for a Presidential run

When making a bid for the throne
You don’t want to use funds of your own
So go to the bank
And be perfectly frank
And they’re certain to give you a loan.

    He’s gambolling €750,000 to get a job?

Presidential Salary is €250K; that’s ~€136K after tax. So all of his take-home pay for the first 5½ will pay back the loan.

    That is bonkers!

    I’m out.

If he gets the job, he’ll join an elite and will be able to charge a premium on the international talks circuit after the gig.
I assume there’ll be a nice pension too?
Perhaps a decent long term investment.

I’ll give you the full amount, but I want 60%!

Up to 200k of expenses are refunded if you get a quarter of a quota or more.

Mary Davis spent over 400k and got zilch of a refund; FG over 500k and no refund last time. So it’s a very dangerous game to play.

I think I preferred when the presidency was a staid, respectable sinecure for some clapped-out old man who has done the state some service anointed by one or both of the main parties. It’s certainly better then the unedifying spectacle of various patently unworthy people putting themselves forward as worthy of the highest office in the land. The fact that it carries no hard power makes attempts to justify one’s own suitability for the post even more difficult than it might be for other high offices.
