Possibly to give conspiracy loons something to latch onto?
You’d be a bit of an expert on “conspiracy loons” I’d say.
I think you’ll find 00:01 is not midnight Sunday but rather Monday morning. he’s just starting work really really early
Because his term of office begins on Monday 3rd September and he wanted to make the point that policing is 24hrs, and doesn’t fit neatly into a 9 to 5 working day.
Got the ‘new boss in town’ publicity anyhow.
Fair cop !

I’ll get me coat
“Any idea why the new Garda Commissioner was sworn in at Midnight on a Sunday?”
Because the acting Commissioner’s tenure expired on Saturday, 2nd September. I don’t think there’s any significance about the day of the week – it’s simply to ensure there isn’t a gap in leadership.
On reaching his new desk, Drew discovered a langer load of phones in the bottom drawer. “Aha” he exclaimed, “starting bonus, it’s off to cash converters”

refreshing and substantial
Did they play God save the queen during the signing?
Republic of Ireland now has a former member of the B-Specials leading the Garda Siochana.
How many candidates for this position was there I wonder and could they have selected another viable candidate that was not a member of the RUC? I suspect this will not end well and that they will be looking for a new one again before long.
There was 15 candidates in total and yes Im sure they could have found one without the baggage of Drew Harris.
Devil worship!
Think of the overtime
Ha!
sure if nothing else, it’ll make a united ireland easier to sell to our northern cousins post-brexit.
A pompous, theatrical technicality.
He’s claiming overtime already.
What a mess we are. Afraid to sing our own national anthem when we play abroad and now an ex British cop is leading ours. Now thats something to be actually ashamed of.
Afraid to play our anthem ?
Ireland’s Call. You’re too slow to be a real Shinner.
I’m quite sure we played our national anthem before the last football game. They played it at the Olympics too.
I’m not sure when we were afraid to play it?
Then look it up you lazy spawn of Sassenach.
Not opposed to an ex-member of the British police taking this position, in theory. We clearly need root and branch reform of the Gardaí and I don’t know if anybody currently serving in the force has the will or power for that. An outsider is needed.*
Harris’ appointment is a genuine concern, however, given his particular background.
If he wasn’t retired, and the government was serious about reforming the Gardaí, this would be your man: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stevens,_Baron_Stevens_of_Kirkwhelpington
Has there been a greater overhaul and changing of culture in a police force than the one we have seen in the PSNI?
Not that I’m aware of (though I know nathing) so my feeling is that this could be a good appointment.
There wasn’t all that much of an overhaul in the PSNI in the end, Harry. Certainly nothing like people have been led to believe. Many of the senior RUC officers who were nudged out were simply rehired e.g.

Maybe if it was someone from a more normal police background as supposed to someone heavily involved in the murkiest of murkiness in the north and all the baggage of that murderous unpleasantness…and a sworn allegiance to the UK state (disputed zone)…It’s hard to believe that there were no more appropriate candidates for the job…
Bonus points for the Commish if he nails the murderers of Tom Oliver.
I meself am very uncomfortable with this lad
but there is one ting about him
I’d say he’d have no problem arresting a Garda
currently serving, on suspension, or retired
of any rank
Im scared.
He has a history of covering up info on murdered musicians.
Upside: maybe this IS -FINALLY- The end for the Wolfe Tones! Yay!
but yer still going ta’ do
We’re on the one road
on that Gig Rig Jimmy
yeah?
