    Murphy scurrying now. The Posh Boy reckons he can fool us with his bull and bluster. Athens councils will make mincemeat of him. next up will be Harris who is unable to read and understand documentation. (No wonder he flunked journalism).

    Civil Service to run north. This is mainly because the public are getting so pee’d of with the tribal pantomime.

    It’s an interesting one. Civil servants ran the north during most of the troubles and as we are currently questioning the competence of more than one minister in the south, tribal politics aside, maybe it is not such a bad thing?

    People who actually have expertise in specific areas of management are what any normal business would seek so why should the administration of a country be any different? Some of the roads in the north are in a shocking state and people are really suffering on health waiting lists.

    Of course when you start thinking like this, it is inevitable to ask what the purpose of government is at all. Health, housing, education, infrastructure etc should all have the same objective no matter who is in power. Will this mean the civil issues like marriage and abortion will be brought into line with the rest of UK and Ireland?

      Cinsidering what Sinn Fein have done in Northern Ireland, you would have to question the mental capacity of anyone that wants them in power here.

        1. bisted

          …sounds like you think Sinn Fein voters are a basket of deplorables…thing is MaryLou…it’ll be you and the rest of the electorate who descide who’ll be in government…

          It varies across regions, but 20-25% of people have low IQ, with about 10% being very low. It is an interesting correlation don’t you think.

            are you suggesting a minimum or get disenfranchised,your obsessed with some rather pedestrian and boorish SF thrashing,hardly indicative of a high IQ in 2018 don’t you think….

          2. bisted

            …MaryLou’s avatar states her bias on this subject but IQ is not a criterion in deciding who is entitled to vote…you don’t need to be particularly clever to acknowledge democratic electoral outcomes…

            her/him ‘its’ use off a rhetorical question piqued my interest,but agreed on ‘handle’ which is clearly correlated to the dull-witted and feebleminded comments………

      And yet SF are completely right on this. There is just no point having any political infrastructure if one side cannot bring themselves to accept equality. The Irish Language Act has lain bare the deep seated hatred that the vast majority of the Unionist/Protestant community feel to their neighbours. Even the most moderate. And so, we wait for them to mature as people and as a society. Again.

      Ministers are the equivalent of a CEO in a business. The day-to-day running is overseen by the management – the Minister/CEO is there to provide major strategy decisions, and acting as the main point of communication between the Government/board of directors and department/organisation.

      If that role is empty the company/department will cope fine with business as usual. But there will be nobody to push through any strategic (or any major) changes… so it will eventually stifle and die.

        @Cian
        presumably though these businesses you confer equivalence to exist in some parallel fairytale scenario where accountability & responsibility don’t exist :)

        (though I certainly agree on balance the company would cope just fine without any CEO’s being around the gaff)

        1. Cian

          @martco
          I’m not sure what you mean – some CEOs are accountable and responsible; other are not. What accountability & responsibility have we had in the Irish banks? All the CEOs got their golden handshakes and massive pensions.

          My point was they would cope fine in the short term without a CEO. But would eventually wither and die. A government department is capable of running without a minister… but eventually (if it doesn’t change) it will become less and less useful.

    I suppose the one positive thing about the footy last night is that at least Ireland had already qualified to play in the competition.

    1. ReproButina

      I disagree. I think the real positive about the UEFA Nations League is that it’ll show supporters the ROI’s level and remove the ridiculous expectations.

      Indeed: Although Smokey and Convoy were to blame for thousands of young(ish) lads installing CB radios in their Cortinas, giving themselves embarrassing “handles” and trawling the highways and byways spouting american jargon.
      (No comparison with today’s social media of course!).
      Ten Four.
