A Limerick A Day

The Syria-bound Irish Army 58th Infantry Group at Cathal Brugha Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin 6 last month. Some members of the Defence Forces are being paid less than the minimum wage.

We all know that soldiers are tough
And the life that they lead can be rough
But one look at their wage
Is sure to enrage
It’s high time we paid them enough

    It’s difficult.
If you are a young enlisted soldier – living on base, getting all your accommodation, food, etc; then the salary is great – it’s all spending money[1].
If you are a young enlisted soldier – living off-base; then the salary is totally pants – and isn’t enough.

[1] this is my understanding – I’m open to correction.

Young soldiers living in barracks (SLI – Single Living In) have their cost accomadation and rations deducted at source…they dont get it for free.Accomadation and rations are included when on 24hr barrack duties.

Pay them more, reduce the force to a small highly professional force, with peace keeping and natural disaster recovery team that can be sent abroad to help countries in need, specialist divers, IT , etc etc, then remove the state security function from the Gardai and have them do it ..

It already **is** a small highly professional force, Ireland spends the 2nd lowest amount on defence by GDP in Europe. After Luxembourg. 0.35 %
