Pernicio.
The brilliant, award-laden, short movie written and directed by Dave Fox and produced by beloved Broadsheet chum Laura Gaynor (top left at the Royal Television Society Awards with Pernicio director of photography Alfie Hollingsworth).
Available NOW to watch online for the first time!
Pernicio tells the story of a young man who explores his attitude towards life and death when his suicide plans are interrupted.
Dave writes;
I wanted to take a fresh approach to the overused theme of suicide, whilst also painting a picture of a potential futuristic Ireland if we don’t solve our mental health problems
Pernicio won ‘Best Drama’ at the Royal Television Society Student Awards, the ‘Producers Award’ at the Emerging Directors Awards in Dublin and ‘Best Student Film’ at the Richard Harris Film Festival and Underground Cinema Awards in Ireland.
AND It made the Official selection of the Newport Beach Film Festival in California and the Cork Film Festival and also screened at the Puerta Valetta FIlm Festival in Mexico last night with Spanish subtitles.
Laura writes:
I just want to say a big big thanks to the ‘sheet for giving us such a platform while we were making this short. We really enjoyed making it and hope you get a chance to watch. Let us know what you think!

Loved that, Laura. Well done to everyone.
Thanks so much Orla! Glad you liked the film :)
Well done Laura and co.
…not sure how to take that ending. Left me thinking though, which is more than many movies do :) Well done.
Thanks! :) Yeah it is an open ending so it sort of leaves it up to you, I won’t spoil it :)
Just finished watching. To say that was thought provoking is an understatement. Beautifully done, and excellent actors. I can see that happening. I can also see why it won awards.
As someone who has lost friends to suicide, and others to illness, the juxtaposition of the two here is wonderful.
Well done to all.
Oh, and I have a pair of socks just like that :)
Thanks so much for your comment! :) Passed it on to the director. I’m really glad you liked the film :) Thanks so much again
Powerful. Well done Laura. Not everyone has a choice to live is the message I took from it. The difference between euthanasia and suicide well highlighted. Very thoughtfully and sensitively imo. Sorry if I’m off the mark but it’s all subjective. The beauty of art. Makes us think.
Looking forward to your next film.
Great to see new emerging talent like Dave Fox. Yes he is right when he mentions the ‘over used theme of suicide’.
Provocateurs needed now more than ever. Great to see them being giving the adulation they deserve. That’s the epitome of putting on the green jersey. Something RTE don’t understand because there is no creative people allowed be creative in RTE.
Not to take away from all the hard work of Laura and her crew. It’s all about ‘Pernicio’.
Thanks Johnny! :) Glad you liked the film! :D Hopefully we will have new films around the corner soon! If you check out Dave’s Vimeo he has another few things up there too. Have a look at ‘Lunchtime Blues’ if you get a chance, it’s one from a few years ago but is v funny.
Nice one Laura. Will do
