This morning

A recheck of the European Election vote of Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada and The Green Party’s Grace O’Sullivan has begun in the Ireland South constituency at 9am.

Ms Ní Riada’s director of elections requested the recheck after the 18th count left her trailing Ms O’Sullivan by 327 votes.

After the 18th count was announced, returning officer Martin Harvey said he had acceded to a request from Ms Ní Riada’s director of elections for a recheck.

these elections really mean nothing to me. i cant see how people are excited or curious to see who gets elected. it’s just a bunch of people tryna get their snout in the trough. no ones guna effect any actual change once they get a seat. following it is like following who gets a promotion in a company that has nothing to do with you. its weird.

I think Ming, Wallace and Daly will make the other Irish MEPs sit up and behave as there will be more public interest in the goings-on in Brussels and more media interest. Wallace and Daly really did shake things up in the Dáil whether you like them or not. They will be missed here.

I agree that they will be missed from the Dail. I fear their unique brand of stirring things up will be wasted in Europe.

Ming has been in Europe for years and hasn’t shaken things up. anyways they got SF seats – the other Irish MEPs are safe and will happily ignore them.

Shinners say they’re “likely” to demand a full recount because the difference between Liadh and Grace is only 327 out of nearly 750,000 votes. In a council election, that would equate to just 5 votes. At least, that’s what they say. In fairness to them, most parties would do the same in this position.
We’ll probably have a final result in Cork Monday week.

I don’t see the purpose of a full recount

      Beyond the 1st count,
      the most dramatic one
and the one that really shuffled them around was the 17th Count
The distribution of Malcom Byrne’s votes

However Liadh did better out’ve that distribution
      3,734 to Gracie’s 2,972
And likewise with Billie’s surplus divy
      2,806 to Gracie’s 2,611

If there’s anything to be found
I’d go back to the 16th count
That was the distribution of 2 eliminated Candidates vote
Andrew Doyle ( 41,416) and Sheila Nunan (25,958)

That’s was when things really started to go mad
Gracie got a savage + 8,192 bringing her up to 93, 123 (and up over Billie)
      Whereas Liadh got herself 4,517
And at that stage Clune looked like she was a gonner only for Malcolm Doyle to save her, and Billie.

That’s where I’d start anyway – check the tot of Doyle and Nunan, and redo the distribution.

Total recount is a loada boll rhymes with socks
