Tánaiste Simon Coveney, above, told the show:

“Fine Gael is a safe pair of hands in Government. Yes, we’ve made some mistakes….I would ask people to judge governments and judge political parties by their record and I think, by the time an election comes around next May, I would hope that we’ll be able to stand over a very strong record.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has told those attending the Fine Gael think-in:

“I have always said that I believed that the next general election should take place in the summer of 2020.

I think May 2020 is the right moment. It will allow to us to complete a full parliamentary session in the new year, discharge our Government duties around St Patrick’s Day and the March European Council and have a new Government in place well in advance of the next summer recess.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that May 2020 is the “right moment” for a general election.

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said Mr Varadkar wrote to Fianna Fáil Leader Mícheál Martin to say that a general election would take place next summer, in May or June.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One Mr Coveney said the Taoiseach wrote to Mr Martin many months ago about the date of the next election.

He said the Taoiseach asked Mr Martin for the space to allow the Government to do what it needs to for the country in relation to Brexit planning.

Mr Coveney said if there was a no-deal Brexit the Government wants to be in a position to try to steer and protect Ireland.

He said Fine Gael was a safe pair of hands in Government.

    From Miriam Lord this morning

““The last major event of the wretched think-in season gets under way on Thursday near Ballycotton in Cork when Fine Gael drags the suffering hacks to the other end of the country for two more days of inconsequence.
The party has booked every room in the Garryvoe Hotel to further inconvenience the attendant media and avoid being pestered over breakfast. Fianna Fáil started doing the same thing when they were losing the run of themselves in government.”

NCH, NBP, the €420,000 affordable home, record homelessness, record patients waiting, record trolley numbers, unknown crime levels because the statistics have been unreliable since 2014, 6% of FG TDs either making or providing professional advice for dodgy compo claims, cervical check and the whole roadshow is 100% dependent on the convicted criminal Michael Lowry to survive. Yes, even if they don’t realise it, FG has lost the run of itself.

Looks like Leo’s hair is as genuine as him. Some men shed hair through their 40’s but our Leo seems to be reversing the effects of baldness. Nothing can stop him. Some man for one man.

Varadkar always evolving into a true statesman. We can be proud as a nation to have a wonderful leader. He’s destined for great things after politics too….

They’ll both be a good as gold in this particular constituency. With me anyway.

Tis one of her running mates that will cause us the most grief I’d say
And the Labour lad, maybe. He’s worked hard down there, and they can expect a bump in fairness

Don’t know who the Greens have in mind, but it won’t be anyone with our track record and graft
And Its no constituency for Indos or PBP comrades.
Unless the farmers get organised. The its anyone’s game.

Win or Lose, we’ll have it all said and put out there
So it won’t be a losing campaign anyway

“we’ll be able to stand over a very strong record”

Like the record number of homeless people. That type of record?

Morning Ireland (most listened to radio programme) FG finance minister gets an easy interview with Bryan Dobson

RTE News At One, one of the most listened to daily radio programmes, FG foreign minister gets an easy interview without any challenge about Irish equivalent of Yellowhammer.

RTE News at Six, what’s the betting Leo will be on to tell us how well theyre doing and shure, we’re lucky to have them with all the turmoil around.

News for you, RTE. This is not a news service.

I really wish people would get in the streets and demand a general election instead of having to listen to these gonzos meant to represent voters telling us how THEY will decide when an election happens.

Varadkar really has a God complex; others would call it Narcissistic Personality Disorder – either way, it’s detrimental to those of us who aren’t in his personal circle of friends…
