Alpaca Man.
A mini documentary about Joe Phelan, an ex-bank worker turned full-time Alpaca farmer in Wicklow.
Colin Brady writes:
In this mini-documentary we visit Joe as he introduces us to his alpacas Ted, Ted 2, Gene Simmons and Katiet to name a few. Joe names every alpaca and his first few were named after his own children. It turns out most people LOVE these weird and wonderful creatures.

Morning all the Larry’s out in Bray and other far off exoctic places.
You’ve got photos hanging again on a few posts so far.
On The Stig
On The New College Green Deal
On Loughshinny, Sure where would you get it
and finally on anniversary, Scooby Doo.
I see it’s not just editing and censoring you’re having consistency issues with, eh?
And then they put up this lovely story so just take in all that Alpaca goodness and exhale slowly!
Now, don’t you feel better? I do!
:)
But what do they produce – meat, milk, fur?
Looks like a glorified petting zoo to me as opposed to a working farm.
They produce a fiber that’s a substantially superior alternative to sheep’s wool.
And a lot more expensive I bet?
You’d be looking at 1.5-2x the price of sheep’s wool, depending heavily on the colour, breed and what part of the alpaca it’s shorn from. There’s a lot more sheep in the world and they’re a lot more co-operative when it comes to shearing time so higher price is a given.
Look, if you’ve got a good alpaca -shearing story then share it!
In my life I have participated in the shearing of two alpacas. I only gave the second one a go because I thought the first one might have been insane.
So more profitable to farm than beef, eh?
