Cardinal George Pell with Pope Francis in 2017

This morning.

Via The Guardian:

Cardinal George Pell was aware of children being sexually abused within the Archdiocese of Ballarat by notorious paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale, Australia’s child abuse royal commission found, and it was “implausible” that other senior church figures did not tell Pell abuse was occurring.

More than 100 previously redacted pages of the child abuse royal commission report relating to Cardinal George Pell and what he knew about child sexual abuse within the Catholic church were tabled to parliament today.

While the commission delivered its final report to parliament in December 2017 following a comprehensive five year inquiry into abuse in institutions throughout Australia, survivors and advocates have been forced to wait for the findings relating to Pell because of legal action against him.

There was concern the findings would prejudice a jury, so they were withheld. Pell was acquitted in April of child sexual abuse charges and released from jail, clearing the way for the report to be made public.

And so caring about abused children, who he mentions constantly in his defence of legal appeals. A saint, really.

          1. newsjustin

Casual slur – just because I’m against potential miscarriages of justice I must be pro child abuse. Well done.

          2. Ghost of Yep

You are rabid about this supposed miscarraige of justice because of who he is and who he represents. Don’t be acting silly.

          3. newsjustin

Ghost of Yep, is that the same reason Broadsheet was interested in the case and then, suddenly, wasn’t?

          4. Ghost of Yep

An Irish left-leaning website may have an editorial slant that could be perceived as negative against the Catholic Church? Heaven forfuppinbid. I’m not even saying they do btw. They said to you at the time they were waiting for this report to be published and they didn’t even have to.

Keep your faith. Support the church. Go to mass. Nobody cares anymore.

As my link below shows the Catholic News Agency is all too willing to ignore certain news items in their best interest. Does that not bother you?

Do I have to list the litany of abuses that would lead most people who have any knowledge of the church to think that he was guilty? Not to mention he isn’t exactly cleared of all crimes.

And for the record, i love Jesus. I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way either. Be he man/myth/legend his story is truly inspirational and can serve as a guide for people to live and love in a very positive way for themselves and others. I’ll be damned if an organization that is constantly chasing its tail to cover up it’s crimes can dictate my relationship with him or claim moral superiority over me.

You can’t claim any moral superiority on this.

          5. newsjustin

            Ghost.

An editorial slant is one thing. It’s part of the charm of BS. Ignoring the outcome of a case you’ve covered over 2 years, multiple times, because you don’t like the result deserves ridicule.

A site calling itself Catholic News Agency is not THE catholic news agency. They are a site registered in Denver Colarado it seems. And they have already covered the Royal Commision report shortly after Pell’s acquital https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/after-criminal-acquittal-cardinal-pell-likely-to-face-several-civil-suits-98152
It’s less than 24 hours since this latest report. If they wait another 30days they’ll be in Broadsheet’s league. Let me know if they do.

I’m not claiming any moral superiority over this. Pell’s acquital is a fact. But it’s old news. I’m glad Broadsheet is covering this latest development and have been able to catch up.

He was acquitted you say Bodger?

How have we not been made aware of this previously?

      1. newsjustin

I wonder why Bodger and the BS team didn’t report it. They were all over the case up until that point, to be fair.

…Pell was found guilty by a jury whose verdict was later overturned by a non-jury Court…why have juries in the First place…no doubt Pell will be seeking damages for wrongful incarceration…and the Vatican for recovery of costs,..

      1. bisted

…not at all…lucky he had the resources of the Vatican to persue this…ordinary people would not be able to…no doubt he will be seeking damages…

        1. newsjustin

Appeals should (and I hope are) open to all. I assume a form of legal aid is available, if not, it should be. If there is an inequality in the system that makes it less likely that poorer people can’t appeal, or can’t do so successfully, that’s the system’s fault. Pell is, indeed, lucky that a robust appeals system was available and (finally) struck out the thoroughly unsafe verdict. That kind of rigourous appeal system should be open to everyone, I’m totally in agreement with you on that.

I don’t know if someone can sue for damages if they eventually have the verdict quashed on appeal. That’s kind of like the system working itself out.

          1. Papi

Is your head this far deep in the sand also effective against Corona? Asking cos I care.

          2. bisted

…Jury found Pell guilty and he spent 400 days in jail before his very expensive lawyers were able to find a technicality whereby a non-jury Court released him…anyway…he’s been sprung…maybe you and the Vatican can concentrate on the plague…

          3. newsjustin

Papi, the only people with heads in sand are BS, who ignored a major turning point in this case (that they’d covered extensively till then) because they didn’t like the outcome.

Bisted, it was not a “technicality”. Read the decision of the 7 judges of the High Court. Pell’s conviction was deemed unsafe and quashed because the judges, examining all thr evidence said that no jury, acting reasonably, could possibly find him guilty beyond reasonable doubt because of the weakness of the prosecuting case and the lack of any evidence other than a single complainant. That’s not a technicality. That’s the fundamental basis of a justice system like ours and Austrailia’s.

          4. Papi

Your faith is, I’m sure, a comfort to you and I’m happy for you. The damage that your attitude has done to people however, I have an issue with. It’s what kept these people safe throughout systematic keeping people ashamed, outcast and just basically unhappy for not toeing the line, doing what you’re told no matter what and not questioning your”betters”. And yes, I mean you and your ilk. The Roman Catholic church is an aberration of faith and religion and all things that those should be promoting. And you are a blind follower and I wish you well, but please don’t try to convince anyone that you’re chasing this rabbit cos you believe in justice. If you did, you’d mention the utter disgrace that those ravens and magpies have done. To society, to children, to women and all this while living large on the tit of the state and collection plate with no remorse. At all.
At least it won’t last more than a couple of generations before you all go where you should have a long time ago if it wasn’t for blind, obedient, misdirected people like your fine self.

          5. newsjustin

Papi, this has, fundamentally, nothing to do your your religious views or mine. This is about how a man can be put on trial and convicted based on the claim of a single person with zero corroborating evidence and evidence to the contrary that a crime couldn’t have taken place. That particular wrong has been righted. That is all. The Australian justice system is having to come to terms with how this happened.

The Royal Commision report stands on it’s own and the findings just add further to the litany of failure of the catholic church and its leaders, including Pell.

Both of these things can be, and indeed, have been proven to be true.

Both of these things can be, and indeed, have been proven to be true.

    1. Papi

And yet I feel you’re focusing on this”miscarriage of justice” more than another. Why?
      I know why.

      1. newsjustin

I have focussed on it here mainly because BS failed to report it. They’ve now rectified this.

        1. Papi

A very cowardly response, dude. But, hey, Pell is aquitted, what do you care now? In nomine padre et filius et spiritu sanctimonious.

          1. Cú Chulainn

I think he might be charged with conspiracy now.. that would be nice for all of the Abused..

        2. V

          What’s this failed to report
Who do you think you are Justine?

You don’t pay for use of this platform
I’m pretty sure you don’t contribute to their running costs
          Or volunteer material for publishing

What gives you the entitlement to make demands on what Broadsheet do
          Or don’t
          Their gaff Their rules

          And guess what else
Something you and your crowd don’t like

          Their CHOICE
          What they do or don’t

          Seriously
Just how fulla’ yourself are you?

          You’re coming up on vile
Ronan Mullan following Catherine Noone into the Ladies to keep harassing her Vile

Is that the type of person you are?

          1. newsjustin

As I said above. Following the story fully and then not following when they don’t like the turn it takes is open to ridicule. BS would rightly highlight such nonsense in other media outlets.

          2. V

Maybe they lost interest in it
            It happens in publishing
            Maybe it’s not news enough
Maybe it’s material their readers aren’t interested in

            Stories fade all the time
            Readership moves on
You’ve never seen a paper repeat a headline

This is just not big deal story you think it is
            Get over it

          3. Cian

            newsjustin is right.
There are 5 (linked) stories here on Broadsheet. The first 4 are about Pell’s trial and conviction, this one is about Pell’s knowledge that wasn’t mentioned in the trial. But they haven’t covered his release. It is very selective reporting.

No: they don’t have to report what they don’t want to.
Yes, it is the “their house their rules”.

But that doesn’t take away from the BS bias.

*oh, and the “Stories fade all the time/ Readership moves on” doesn’t work since they are now reporting on Pell again.

          4. Ghost of Yep

You have to be a special type of stupid to have not noticed the BS biasis at this point. Call them out if you wish you are free to do so.

Justins bias is also very very clear although he claims it not to be.

            So maybe everyone is right.

          5. V

            Well
            If it is a bias
Then it’s one particular bias I’m perfectly happy to lean into
            As it’s one I share

And I’ll make no apologies for that

          6. newsjustin

That’s welcome Bodger. And it’s good that you highlighted this story and the various steps in Pell’s criminal case. But it is nonsensical to do all that and not to report (until now as an aside) on his conviction being quashed, even while voicing your displeasure at it.

          7. bisted

…and my god ‘thumbs’ who featured in your Xmas pet parade in 2014 died…thank you in advance for the obituary …
