    That’s very good.
What triggered it was as good.
Frustrated with the lack of support and the ‘inability’ of the government to provide a suitable building in Dublin fot the (amazing) modern art collection he wanted to donate to the people of ireland, Hugh Lane presented plans for a ‘floating museum’. It was to be ‘floating in the air’ so to speak, on a purpose-built bridge between ha’penny bridge and Grattan Bridge (where the Millenium pedestrian ridge is now). The plans were drawn, but it was rejected. There were several objections to it, mainly on the line that it was too whacky, but also on the basis that it would block the wonderful view of the sunset from the city centre quays…

Hugh Lane spent half his time complaining that the city didn’t want the collection, and half the time saying that the city wasn’t begging for it enough. He was an attention seeker. He should’ve just given the collection and not have demanded that his building vanity project be built according to how he wanted it. A very childish individual.
