Sinn Féin TDs Chris Andrews and Eoin Ó Broin arrive at Leinster House this morning

Earlier.

Kildare Street, Dublin 2.

Meanwhile…

Speaking on Newstalk’s Pat Kenny show, Ms [Mary Lou] McDonald said that the proposed new government would leave Sinn Féin in a very strong political position.

“They may succeed in slowing down the very necessary change that we need in our society but they won’t stop it,” she said.

…Sinn Féin would provide “a very coherent, a very progressive, a very enlightened opposition” throughout the lifetime of the next government. “We will deliver on the mandate for change that we were given,” she said.

Ms McDonald referred to Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil as Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee and said that they were determined that “come what may” Sinn Féin would be kept out of government.

I think many people are obviously impressed with how the covid crisis was handled by the ‘caretaker’ government, but as we all know, the electorate have a short memory too. The real test of the new government will be whether they can deliver, and how satisfied the electorate are at the end of a year or two years. And if there is a sense that the myriad issues with housing and health and infrastructure, as well as climate, have not been seen to be effectively dealt with, then Mary Lou may well have a point.

While that might have been true in the early stages, I think the recent missteps in the handling of the virus are starting to get traction. The bungling of childcare, school re-openings, and the communications on face coverings are starting to grate, as is the dumb stuff about a €9 meal in a pub being enough to protect you from Coronavirus.

SF needs modernize and sideline the oul lads who still determine policy,I support them but refuse join them as they are are years behind in green policy and legalizing drugs, needle exchanges, until then I wish them well and hopefully The Greens will wake them up a bit, their governing experiment in NI has been a disaster,I dont think they are ready to govern inn the south.

It annoys me the whole RA thing as I and many others have invested considerable time and energy in the peace process,I do indoor farming and when I spoke/pitched the various parties on developing a weed industry the NI unionists were by far the most receptive and forward’s looking,SF nah can’t touch it they should be criticized over policy and things, just not the constant RA nonsense after 20 years peace.

It’s ironic since you are the poster most likely to mention the IRA as well as the poster most likely to give out about people bringing up the IRA.

        c’mere Cian
aren’t you a bit too old now for that sorta schoolboy carry on

Like do I really need to repeat the fact that both yerselves in the Blueshurts and the eFFers have IRA histories within their own memberships

and when it comes to hot heads blowing off to pander to their bases, Fine Gael has plenty of their own
Tell me how is up dah’ ra any different to say Phil Hogan talking about kicking in doors and reducing tap flow to a trickle, or about “screwing” in the biblical sense a party member
or indeed John Farrelly calling another party member the n-word “in the woodpile”
Or what onetime Party Exec Barry Walsh had to say about women
And there’s plenty more – just ask Cian

Seriously – own your own history first before you start picking and flicking at other political adversaries

        And btw
Ye all use Tiocfidh ar la

Because silly macho rhetoric, or even misogynistic or racist language, is not the same as (i) blowing children up in a shop, and then (ii) attending commemorations for those brave patriot child-murderers.

No surprise at all that the aul unionists would be up for the ‘Cash for Hash’.

      It’s their culture.

The depression here resulted in prohibition getting lifted, the unionists especially Paisley are singularly focused on attracting investments to counteract the appeal to NI residents of the south.

They have no outdated BS regarding cultivating and extracting cannabis, they also view legislation as a way curb some the gangsterism infecting both communities.

I just didn’t purse it because I’m not really that interested but if someone was, they could easily negotiate a sweetheart deal and open a few shops along the border-the Irish weed market is about 1 Billion-we would grow it all in NI in a special tax zone and sell into the republic via border shops.

This has been executed in many states where adjoining states are slow legalize it – Mass-NY with a Berkshires weed shop having some the highest sales in the industry by diverting product to out state residents.

        1. Johnny

..was at lunch-anyway some enterprising weed company could easily get the unionists to support a proposal to build a state the art outdoor/indoor/greenhouse cultivation and extraction facility in one its tax fee zones-investment of about 100 million creating 200 high paying green jobs, facility would be solar and alternative energy powered, ideally hydro…

“Locally, there have been calls to give the entire region of Northern Ireland “free port status” which would be mean imports would be processed in the region to avoid the imposition of customs duties.”

This would allow you flood the UK market and divert the product into Ireland via border shops that are open anyone over 21-no residency required.

“At Theory Wellness in Great Barrington, 600 to 900 people arrive each day, nearly half from nearby New York. Many trek in from Buffalo, a five-hour drive, and lots more come from New York City, a two-and-a-half-hour drive, said CEO Brandon Pollock.”
