    Future Pub-Quiz question:

Which Irish Government spent more time becoming mates with each other than they spent actually doing their jobs?
(Clue: It was the last time anyone took the Green Party seriously.)

    #despitebrexit Breaking News …
The European Space Agency has selected Leicester for its new space tech incubation centre.
Expected to create 2,500 jobs, the £100m-plus Space Park Leicester development has already attracted global companies including Lockheed Martin, Thales, Airbus and Hewlett Packard.
Interestingly the story isn’t covered on its website by the BBC’s science pages – although there was room for a story about Nasa naming its HQ after its first black female engineer and one about Greta Thunberg saying that climate change ‘is as urgent as coronavirus’.
Meanwhile American aerospace giant Moog Aerosoace, headquartered in New York, is building a new £40m factory in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Moog describes the investment as “an integral part of its commitment to long-term development and manufacturing in the UK.”
Brexit Blighty is open for business baby.
Heh x to infinity and beyond.

love a nibble on some dulse with a dry cider, perfect apero

          1. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

ok this looks weird now, it was a response to a since deleted comment above about seaweed

          2. jamesjoist

Hey Janet , what is ‘ dulse and yellow man ‘ mentioned in the song about the Old Lamas Fair in Ballycastle-o .
            Did you treat your Maryann
To the dulse and yellow man. ?

          3. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

ah a Nordie culinary delight, dulse is a beautiful purple seaweed, my auld fella got me into it as a kid he used to go picking it up in Donegal where the best comes from, delicious as a snack or cooked in breads, the yellow man is a kind of chewy honeycomb made from butter, brown sugar, golden syrup, vinegar, and baking soda

          4. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

if you fancy trying dulse I discovered Dunnes do it ( oh happy day ) in the Sea Vegetables range, usually stacked near the fish counter

          5. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

oh and of you do try it don’t mind that nonsense it says on the box about washing it first unless it’s a rock hard batch it should be kind of leathery in texture, treat it like a mushroom and just brush it with your fingers or pick out the odd wee shell

          6. Janet, dreams of spidercrab and fancy pastries

isn’t it interesting how a few km changes so much on this island, I guess because people used to stay within a three mile radius of their homes in average all their lives ( I’m talking up until the mid 1800’s and obvs I’m generalising) if you look at vernacular architecture material used would be from a three mile radius, it’s why thatch goes from reeds to straw right down to stones , anyway I’m going off on one ;)

Interesting one the EU space agency basing its self in england

Why not the only English speaking country in the Eurozone which is Ireland
Why are they spending EU taxes in a non EU nation which has left the EU

      1. Charger Salmons

        Good questions.
Which is why all the Project Fear nonsense about Brexit all rings a bit hollow now.
But hey ho, onwards and upwards so to speak.

        1. Rosette of Sirius

The ESA is not an EU institution so nothing to see here. As with Switzerland and Norway, Blighty still gets to play Rocketman.

          Better luck next time Fararger.

          1. Charger Salmons

There’s a bit of toing and froing going on about the EU contribution towards the ESA budget but the latest figure for 2021 through 2027 is €12.7billion.
Ireland’s space programme currently undergoing a few teething problems in a field in Roscommon.

Funnily enough the BBC also failed to cover the maiden speech in the House of Commons this week by the first Conservative MP of West Indian heritage.
    And it’s quite a story.
Darren Henry rose from working class roots to become a Squadron Leader in the RAF and then a senior executive in the NHS.
He replaced the former Tory MP Anna Soubry, rejected by her constituents at the last election but who still gets wheeled on to the BBC to warn about Brexit.
Darren is one to watch …

      1. Charger Salmons

The gin-soaked old hack was on the Beeb so often they might as well have given her a job.
Sadly with her trouncing at the box office – what party did she morph into eventually – her days in the limelight are fewer.
Like all those other Remainers given the heave-ho by the electorate.

        1. bisted

…not sure I really know who Anna Soubrey* is but isn’t Laura Kuenssberg the pin-up of the alt right hang’em flog’em brigade…

*I do bow to your superior knowledge on gin victims…

        1. Brother Barnabas

          hardly

his grandfather was a high court judge (despite being irish: padraic seosamh milmo) – a counter-uncle-tom is anything

oh, hang on, you were basing your remark on his complexion…. now, THAT’s racist

    1. Vanessanelle

      In fairness
      I voted against retaining it
But I’d be in there by 8 in the morning if one of the lads gave me a call yesterday

And she only lost in February
      Same with Timmy
Who had three eFFers on the ticket with him this time
And who has brought extra seats for them before

      Unlike Lorraine CL
How many times has she been rejected by the voters in Fingal?
Twice within six months there alone
And she was rejected by the Senate voters btw

It makes no strategic political sense anyway.
So they’ll have to figure out something new to explain her tweets to her new Seanad colleague Senator Eileen Flynn.

Plus btw – LCL was no mere observer to another more recent and far more foul tweet exchange, I’m only flagging it now because it should have got her suspended. At the very least.

Maybe Michael Martin has his reasons

  4. Charlie

I’m curious. Does anyone know what 4 individuals nominated Paddy Hooligan for Mayor of South Dublin?

      1. Charlie

Yea sure. I suspect they were Séan ‘The boxer’ O’Ceallaigán, Séamus ‘the shoplifter’ McScrote, Gearóid ‘the crusher’ MacMahoonagh and Mairtín ‘The Enforcer’ McPintofplain.

Black Lives still not mattering much in Chicago this weekend.
A one-yeard-old child killed in a drive-by shooting, seven dead so far in the city.

You beat me to it this morning.
The sad thing is this sort of fresh satirical outrage used to be preserve of alternative comedians.
And appeared regularly on the BBC.
Now the stale and whiskery HIGNFY is considered right-on and racy.

      1. Joe F

Well Mr Charger, you still haven’t answered my questions from yesterday. Obviously you don’t have an answer that makes any sense!

        1. Charger Salmons

No mention of your unhealthy interest in the German suspect in the Madeleine McCann case ?

          1. Joe F

Good man, answer my question by asking another question!! Can you not just answer my question on your dear British newspapers and the way they’ve reported on this case. And don’t answer like a politician does.

          2. Charger Salmons

You haven’t answered my query as to why I should justify the Daily Mail reporting on the Madeleine McCann case.
It would be like me asking you to justify this fellow’s behaviour simply because you’re Irish.
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuI23zCudKY
Get off your knees man and cast off that inferiority complex. You’ll feel better for it trust me.

          3. Joe F

The silence is deafening Charger, or whatever your real name is!
Here are links to 2 webpages you should look at

            https://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/Nigel/id467.htm

            https://www.irishtimes.com/news/murat-awarded-more-than-600-000-over-madeleine-mccann-libels-1.945550

Both were “suspects” in Madelines disappearance, that were proved to have no link whatsoever to her. Of course, not that printing the truth should get in the way of selling more papers should have!

There is another name been bandied about, Martin Ney, again no link or evidence to him.

You would think your darling, superior British would learn their lesson before they report on the way they have. The evidence linking present German “suspect” is flimsy to say the very least. Still, as I said it doesn’t stop the gutter press using this as a tool to sell more.

I’m 95% sure he had nothing to do with it. I may be wrong! He is a despicable excuse for a human being, but he has nothing to do with her missing.

There is far more evidence linking her parents in my opinion, for example, an Irish family called the Smiths, are 80% sure they saw Gerry McCann carrying a young child in his arms away from the apartment at the time of her disappearance. This of course is wildly under reported by the British tabloids. Of course this doesn’t prove they’re involved. I simply don’t know who done it, I’m maybe 80% sure the parents were involved, but I could be wrong!

The way the Daily Mail and others are reporting it you would think 100% this is the guy responsible.

          4. Joe F

I don’t feel any inferior complex or superior complex either. I just have to laugh at the way you go on here, as if the British are superior to the rest of Europe. Of course you still haven’t answer my question about your dearly beloved British newspapers! Do you agree with the way they have reported the latest suspect? (take a look at 2 links in my other post)

          5. bisted

…out of the past three elections, the English have returned two old Etonians and members of the Bullingdon club with ‘a stonking majority’…and the Irish are the ones with the inferiority complex?

          6. SOQ

Given that neither of the two old school parties would consider going into power with SF- I’d be very careful while throwing stones.

He’s a troll? Why allowed remains to be seen.

          7. Charger Salmons

            Yo
The current prime minister is a Catholic.
The Chancellor is a Hindu of Punjabi Indian-East African stock.
The Home Secretary is a Hindu. Her parents were shopkeepers who emigrated to Britain from Uganda.
She replaced a Muslim Home Secretary.
The Foreign Secretary is a Jew whose father fled Czechoslovakia when the Nazis took over.
A quarter of Boris’ Cabinet are women with a record number of ministers from ethnic minorities.
Run a few numbers from the new Irish government past me when you have time, there’s a good man.

Ah, ye.. You’re welcome and cheers for the reminder.. I’m looking forward to that one too…

In the meantime here’s a couple of excellent talks he’s given that articulate and explain quite a lot of not so common sense(unfortunately) about politics, economics and historically how the various cycles of forces and influences on the planet tend to operate over time.

You can find plenty more but these two stood out in my mind as being particularly worthwhile for everyone to get up to speed on his analysis so far..

Always informative without getting lost in the weeds of statistical analysis but also very entertaining and often hilarious as he used to be a stand-up comedian in a previous life, apparently?..

        Enjoy!.. & Pass it on..

I would like extend my warmest congratulations to Irelands new health minister and assume he’s a man of honor.

“But the Wicklow TD is open to legalising marijuana.

“I’d like to find a way to decriminalise small quantities of weed. If a grown adult wants to grow a herb and then smoke it, and there are no negative consequences for other people, then they should be allowed to do that,” he said.

“However, any such approach would have to be done in the context of medical research showing that smoking weed as a minor can lead to longer-term mental health challenges.”

    https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/politics/td-stephen-donnelly-admits-smoking-9651547

Stephen left a vapor trail of support for medical cannabis, one hopes he was not trafficking in false hopes, we shall find out, but congrats Stephen.

      1. Johnny

…he was persistent and tenacious in opposition, unlikely he’s going let all the sick and suffering patients down that he filled with hope…..right!

“340. Deputy Stephen S. Donnelly asked the Minister for Health the progress made on the commencement of the compassionate access programme for patients that require treatment with medicinal cannabis; and if he will make a statement on the matter.”

Stoic leader wibbles? Couldn’t see which one that referred to but it’s nauseating whether it’s Leo or Martin. At least everyone will get back to calling the Teesh by their surname. This media honeymoon period would want to last exactly one day only This is a glorified cabinet reshuffle, out with the old, in with the old. Who cares about that history-making guff at this stage,
Also, these front pages suggest that both Martin and the media feel the virus is history.

    1. wearnicehats

There is absolutely nothing in the current COVID trends or statistics that warrant it being front page worthy anymore. The only people who are eagerly anticipating a second (third, really) wave are the Prime Time team

      1. Formerly known as @ireland.com

It hasn’t gone away, you know. Hi from Melbourne – case numbers are rising, after many weeks of decline. We were close to zero, 49 new cases today. It is definitely going to hang around for a long time. Complacency is the enemy.

        1. Johnny

…the virus is running wild in US-its out of control,we are looking at another lockdown.

-some nursing home data from NYT for Bodger-if you told me i’d be safer in Ireland during a worldwide pandemic than in New York I would have have laughed at you…

“At least 54,000 residents and workers have died from the coronavirus at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities for older adults in the United States, according to a New York Times database. As of June 26, the virus has infected more than 282,000 people at some 12,000 facilities”

here’s a little poem about Hope, for our government I have none, for the resuming of life I have a glimmer

Hope is the thing with feathers

      BY EMILY DICKINSON

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –
And sore must be the storm –
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –
And on the strangest Sea –
Yet – never – in Extremity,
It asked a crumb – of me.

Will our carbon taxes be increased because of it or made reduce our agriculture to zero? Ie no farming?

    1. Charger Salmons

Another weekend Winky-Woo score of 8/10.
Localised lockdowns are common amongst European countries where there are sudden spikes in C-19 cases.
German authorities re-imposed a pandemic lockdown in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and earlier this week Varadkar said such measures would also be taken in Ireland if they were needed.
But hey, what does that matter when you get a chance of show of the inferiority complex.

      1. Brother Barnabas

“when you get a chance of show of the inferiority complex.”

what’s that you’re trying to say, fellow?

    https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2020-06-26/inside-the-body-the-coronavirus-is-even-more-sinister-than-scientists-had-realized

Researchers exploring the interaction between the coronavirus and its hosts have discovered that when the SARS-CoV-2 virus infects a human cell, it sets off a ghoulish transformation. Obeying instructions from the virus, the newly infected cell sprouts multi-pronged tentacles studded with viral particles…….

I read what it can do to kidneys, as someone which a kidney birth quirk (I don’t like the word defect) , I wish I hadn’t, ignorance can be bliss

    2. SOQ

Personally, I have wondered if there is more to this thing than has been reported. Trump has already stated that he has seen evidence that it came out of the lab and so far all the talk has been about gain of function meaning how infectious they could make it.

But what if they modified it in other ways? Given that these level 4 labs are all over the world, it would be in nobody’s interests to make such public. Developing bio-weapons is illegal and they all would then come under scrutiny.

In which case it is not a corona virus- it is something else.

        1. SOQ

Nigel- you are like one of those summer flies who buzz around a florescent kitchen light but never quite fugue how to get inside the plastic covering.

        2. GiggidyGoo

Just wondering Nigel why you seem to be SOQs personal stalker on this issue. He is asking pertinent questions in my view. Are you taking what the WHO and China as gospel on this pandemic? If you are, I would consider that to be lackadaisical on the issue.

          1. Nigel

I simply occasionally take issue with statements that rely on the presumption that Trump is a reliable source of information. If you have a problem with that you’re welcome to it.

          2. jamesjoist

We’re at the start of the U S A presidential election campaign. Trump is sticking to his anti-Chinese strategy and the Democrats seem to be reviving the Trump / Putin conspiracy . The recent reports of a Russian backed bounty for the deaths of U S troops in Afghanistan would fall into the unverifible rumours category that pass for hard news during election campaigns . For peace of mind it is probably better to ignore the whole thing until the votes are counted in November.

          3. GiggidyGoo

Occasionally – on the occasions that SOQ posts about Coronavirus with alternative views.

          4. SOQ

When did it become a rule that everyone must agree on everything before anyone can agree on anything?

          5. Nigel

Giggy, don’t exaggerate – respondintg to ALL of SOQ’s alternative facts would be a full-time job for a small army of sweat-shop bots.

Take it up with Giggy, SOQ, they don’t like me ocassionally disagreeing with you.

      1. Junkface

@SOQ There are some evolutionary scientists and epidemiologists who have analyzed covid 19 and begun to question why certain typical corona virus traits, this time have normally unrelated effects and neurological attacks. They say it may show signs of manipulation, but they need more study. Bret Weinstein (Scientist) talked about it in a recent interview with Joe Rogan.

    Statement from No. 10:

“The Prime Minister has today announced the appointment of David Frost as the Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser. David is currently the Prime Minister’s Europe Adviser and the UK’s Chief Negotiator. He will succeed Sir Mark Sedwill who has served as National Security Adviser since April 2017.

The Prime Minister, with the approval of HM The Queen, has nominated David for a life peerage.”
