It doesn’t necessarily mean there were more people drinking and driving. It may have had more to do with the fact that you couldn’t drive more than a few miles without meeting a Garda checkpoint for about 8 weeks.
All the pubs were closed; where could they have been possibly driving to/from? You would want to be a really committed drink driver to go out and drive around under the influence during the lockdown.
My guess is people were driving to friends’ houses, having a few drinks and thinking “sure the roads are empty and it’s only a few kms, I’ll be grand to drive”.
Things like illustrates why people like the Capitol Hill protesters are hopelessly naive; while most people are good, there are always enough nihilistic, selfish willywoo-heads to ruin it for the rest of us.
