Bad timing.

She arrived just as they were about to draw the Sweepstakes.

    1. Slightly Bemused

I heard that she was a peculiar kind of thoughtful, and it would not surprise me if she deliberately chose the outfit to match the nurses’ uniforms, standing out amongst the vulture black of the front row (referring only to the outfits)

I feel for the ladies, as it is obviously a nasty… I mean typical Irish day, and they have to stand out without cover. Sometimes etiquette of this nature is idiotic. And the uniforms, while pretty, were not really practical. Thank god for those changes.

My aunt was a nurse of that era, albeit at the other end of the country. She said the white shoes were the worst aspect, as they had to be spotless at all times, regardless of the weather or conditions, and the Matrons ruled with an iron hand.

  1. Bertie Theodore Alphege Blenkinsop

I remember seeing a photo from that trip and she was down at the flats in Ballybough, one of my uncles was there, he said she was absolutely gorgeous.
(apologies to Shayna for stealing her anecdotal style)
