My local radio station was mentioning this morning that they would play Jackie’s Army at 12:30. The co-presenter commented that she had not been born when it all happened, and had never heard Jackie’s army. Looking forward to her comment now.

Fare thee well, Jack. You taught us that dreams are in our own hands.

I was out and about at half past noon. and the shop I was in did an announcement just before 12:30 and asked for a bit of respect, then put on my local radio station and the tribute played. It was amusing seeing all us ould ones singing along and almost dancing (which is about all I can almost manage these days) and the young ones looking on in horror.

If anyone tells you you cannot show emotions with a mask on, trust me when I say they certainly got it across! The amount of embarrassed kids with their dads and, wonderfully in a few cases, their mams, was a sight to behold!

They may never understand quite why this was such an important thing for us. I truly hope for them that they have such a moment that they will still be passionate about 30 years later.

Not a huge fan of football, but man did I get swept up in Italia 90

Even just for the sticker collection!

I’m just thankful it had no effect on me whatsoever, no sireee!
My older brother, Stuttgart ’88 likewise.

Neither was I at the time.
I was working in my local pub that summer. When the boss was doing the roster for the duration of the games, I did my bit for the army… and stepped forward, volunteering to work during the Irish games… Ooooh, the sacrifice lol.
It was just as much fun, with hardly a stir during the games and some of the best views of the screen from behind the bar :)

RIP Jack! Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Imagine – there are people walking around now of legal drinking age who weren’t born the last time someone of their age was able to watch Ireland in a world cup on a pub telly.
    Other useful information.
With Jack’s passing only five members of the 1966 world cup winning team are still alive – George Cohen,Roger Hunt,Nobby Stiles,Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst.
Amazingly the 11 that started the game also finished it – no substitutes were allowed for any reason, including injury.
    RIP Jack.

Out of 21 World Cups England have won 1, never runner up. Out of 15 European Championships England have won none, runners up none. For a population of 60 million that marvelous old boy. Ireland has a population of c 5 million. You really are such a clown Tommy, I mean old boy.

the great unspoken shame is that of that group of players, only the Charlton lads were able to hold on to their medals

every single one of the others had to flog them at various points over the years to pay their gas bills as they stumbled into old age

nobby stiles weeping as he handed his over was especially poignant and disgraceful

      thanks Tories

    Weeping ? Tories ?
Stiles was out buying shoes with his missus when his collection of medals and memorabilia went for a total of £424,438.
He was delighted with the £160,000 he got for his 1966 along with 1968 European cup winners’ medal, which went for £49,402 including VAT and commission. The strip he wore in the final, against Benfica, sold for £30,582 in total, while his 1966 world cup England cap went for a total of £35,287.
More than anything else he was pleased his old club Manchester United bought the most of his prized possessions.
At the time he said “It was always my intention to leave the entire collection to my children. But I have three sons. How do you fairly divide up this sort of collection between them? They have each selected some pieces they would like to keep for themselves.”
The gap between your posts and the truth is wider than that in Nobby’s gums when he didn’t have his teeth in.

      I take it back, charger

      I’m sorry

if there’s anything I can do to attest to the genuineness of my remorse, do please let me know

perhaps I could pay for a local prostitute to pop round your way and keep you company for 10-15 minutes?

You talk about sex so often I’m begining to think Madam Thumb and her four daughters are your only companion Brother.
    Up your game lad.
You’re missing the target more often than Stevie Wonder in an archery contest.
