    ‘https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/politics/leo-varadkar-other-countries-living-with-covid-19-better-than-us-and-pubs-should-be-given-chance-to-reopen-39499427.html’

‘Other countries are living with Covid-19 “better than us” and Ireland needs to rethink its strategy, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has told the Fine Gael parliamentary party.’

It’s a bit galling listening to the ex-Taoiseach come out with this now… although, any chink of light is to be welcomed I suppose.

A mutual trust-based approach between government and public was, and is, the only viable way in the long-term for us to “live with Covid-19”. The strategy of instilling fear and enforcing severe and extended restrictions in the attempt to exert control has done damage on so many levels.

It’s classic Leo. I’m not saying that he’s wrong but he knows exactly what he’s doing coming out with this just before (surprise, surprise) wet pubs open again. He has adeptly left MM to be the one delivering the bad (even realistic) scenario yet, while in the same govt., gets to play the ‘if I had my way’ hand.

      1. The Old Boy

Does my weary mind deceive me, or did Micheál Martin spend some of the time before he became Taoiseach hinting that he considered the lockdown measures then in force to be too draconian?

    2. Steph Pinker

Don’t ever underestimate Varadkar, everything he does and utters is to his benefit and his alone; last week he said the pubs won’t open until next year, now he’s using the pubs as leverage i.e. votes, to have them reopened soon. All he’s ever done is flow with the wind, he has no integrity, just narcissism and arrogance which fuel his drive to have a second term as Taoiseach; as soon as Coveney is out of the way, MM is easy pickings for Varadkar especially considering Brexit, Covid-19 and the inevitable recession which has already taken its first bite – Varadkar wants to be Taoiseach again, once he’s achieved that he’ll secure a cushy position in Brussels.

One thing I’ve observed about Varadkar is that he truly is sociopathic – he has no understanding, empathy or consideration for others. He’ll do very well in politics.

The Tyrone GAA Captain, Mattie Donnelly announced that it will lift the Nation’s spirits when the National League resumes in October, with The Championship beginning thereafter. 2001, The National League was abandoned due to “Foot and Mouth”. Of course everyone wants to play hurling, football and camogie for their clubs/counties. Wait another year? Dublin would probably win again in Football – but the also rans are still there. I love All-Ireland Day football and hurling finals, my Dad used to hoist/fling me over the turnstiles on Jones’s Road when I was a kid – no ticket – I had to sit on the steps near my dad on The Hogan Stand. I loved it. I was @8ish . There is something so beautiful with GAA games that invokes so much passion in parishes around the country, certainly for myself – wait another year. Tyrone For Sam in ’21

Before Cian comes in with his morning twist of figures. There was just one admission to hospital yesterday.

Now, strangely enough i pulled up Cian yesterday morning on his lie when he posted that 40 confirmed cases were in hospital (the figure was 39 according to https://covid19ireland-geohive.hub.arcgis.com/ released yesterday but the figures that have been released for us to view today show…….40). Sure there’s more to Cian than meets the eye. A bit more than a mild interest.

    1. Cian

Haha. That cheered me up and gave me a giggle.

Are you suggesting that I’m a time traveller?
Or that there is a *conspiracy* in the HSE and the numbers are known well in advance? Haha haha

Go on. What’s your cRaZy tHEoRy?

      1. GiggidyGoo

You’re quite a maestro in the crazy theory department. Maybe you’d like a second try at your explanation of the difference in figures yesterday?

          1. Cian

Yeah, and as I already said, the data is updated during the morning.
When I posted that on Tuesday 2nd Sept at 8.54am it was still showing Monday’s figures.

I incorrectly attributed Monday’s figure of 36 as Tuesday’s figure.

When you opened the link on Tuesday, it was still showing Monday’s figures.

If you look at the chart you can see a full history. And guess what? Monday’s figure is still 36.

          2. GiggidyGoo

            Tuesdays link gives mondays figures
            Wednesday’s link gives tuesday’s figures
            Thursday’s link gives Wednesday’s Figures
            Friday’s link gives Thursday’s figures

The figures are updated at night. See the time of my original post today – 5:30am and Thursday’s figures are up. It’s now 10:50 and guess what? They’re the same figures as at 5:30.

            Want to try yet again?

          3. Cian

I’ve just checked (@11.45am) and under the heading “Acute Hospitals Confirmed Cases, Admissions and Discharges” which is the place that talks about Hospital cases, the chart says: “Data last updated: Thursday, September 3, 20202

as of 11.45am, the hospital cases information is still yesterdays.

Note: The ICU data (higher on the page) says Data last Updated: 9/4/2020 (this has been updated since i looked at 8.50 this morning).

The information on this page is coming from different sources updated at different times – not overnight.

          4. GiggidyGoo

You need to try harder now, without diversion. What I’ve posted is correct. You’re worse than a chair-o-plane in a travelling show. Spin. Divert. Etc. Etc.

          5. Cian

            Jeez, this is tedious.
What you posted is incorrect. The data on the website gets updated during the day.

I posted “today’s figures are XX” but put the previous day’s figure in by mistake.

The number I posted was correct – but correct for the previous day.

‘Knowing what pizza you had won’t protect public health’ – pubs ask Data Commissioner to review ‘bonkers’ new measures

Publicans have asked the Data Protection Commissioner to urgently review new guidelines published by Fáilte Ireland which require bars and restaurants to keep a record of what customers eat.

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/knowing-what-pizza-you-had-wont-protect-public-health-pubs-ask-data-commissioner-to-review-bonkers-new-measures-39501702.html

So it appears that not only can this clever virus distinguish between people eating and drinking and people just drinking but it also pays close attention to people’s pizza toppings. I wonder what it would think of my favourite- spinach and egg?

    1. GiggidyGoo

There is a Data Protection issue as well. For example, if a person is ‘ex directory’ there’s a reason for that so hardly feasible he would give out his phone number to someone working in a pub – and cannot be forced to.

      1. george

They can’t force a business to serve them. If nobody in a group is prepared to provide a contact number then no service. Businesses deal with personal data all the time despite the nonsense people like to spread about GDPR it is not illegal.
Many interactions with businesses involve providing phone numbers.

        1. GiggidyGoo

People choose to, or not to as the case may be, give personal information. If they choose to, it’s probably GDPR compliant. If they choose not to give personal information, and they are refused service that’s a different kettle of fish.
There are dangers in giving a phone number to an employee of a bar that you don’t know. He/she could be any kind of maniac, stalker etc.

          1. Janet, dreams of big guns

I had to take my phone number off my dogs collars I was always getting creepy texts from coustemers thinking they were original and charming

          2. Janet, dreams of big guns

well one liked to do security at the door, the German Shepherd, the Jackie liked to go around for cuddles unless there was a match on and she’d go to bed behind the bar, they’d both sell their mother for a swig of Guinness and a slice of Pizza

If a booking is made and the customer refuses to give their number fine we do not take the booking but our telecom system lists the number except withheld numbers

But government have no legal right to do what they just did

Welcome to Orwellian Ireland and covid19AKA war in Oceania

As for the staycation tax scheme only 50 odd places to eat have registered in Galway the same in cork and Kerry which give you little choice for tax reclaim on your staycation

A total failure and proper order

          1. Janet, dreams of big guns

you need to go thin thin and crispy and wood fired or else it’s just an American sandwich

      1. GiggidyGoo

        All except the olives.
Anyone know anywhere in North Wexford / Arklow where they do a good folded Pizza? A Calzone?

        1. Janet, dreams of big guns

          we can go halfsies,
no idea about Wexford but Brezzies in Portmarnock do a mean Pizza if you’re up North Dublin way

Delighted to see the BBC clamping down on their hate-driven activist staff. Given the stuff they come out with these days, one could almost think that the BBC are not longer impartial…

*cough *cough they’re an effin’ lefty joke
