Behind you.

This afternoon.

Government Buildings, Dublin 2.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, waves at Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan today before a discussion between NPHET and the leaders of the three government parties concerning recommendation that the entire country be placed under a nationwide Level 5 lockdown to ‘combat rising cases of Covid-19’.

Speaking on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics programme yesterday, before any mention of Level 5, Mr Ryan said he hoped Level 4 restrictions could be avoided in Dublin and in Donegal, both of which are currently at Level 3.

He said:

“What we’re seeking to do is not to eradicate the virus, I don’t think that’s a viable option but to stabilise it and I think, yes, there’s real concern when you look at other counties [case numbers are] rising very fast.”

Update:

This afternoon.

Leaving Level 5 discussions were, top from left: Dr Holohan; Dr Ronan Glynn, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health; and Chair of NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group (IEMAG) Professor Philip Nolan.

They don’t need masks.

They only fear kryptonite.

Eamon Ryan previously took advise from David King, chief scientific adviser and special representative for climate change to the British government. This promoted the use of diesel cars when in office in 2008.
    David King was wrong.
    Eamon Ryan was wrong.
Why do you think the advice Eamon Ryan parrots now is right???????????????????

He also took advise & relied too much on input from the motor industry before the diesel emissions scandal. The same industry that received a paltry fine & continues to lobby government on a huge scale.

    Dr H.
Who is gonna pay your salary when the county is ruined.
Are you taking a pay cut? I very much doubt it!
Need to keep the economy moving or we will be back in 2011 very quickly!

Bodger, masks aren’t needed outside, unless in unavoidable close quarters. I think you should stop going on about that.

I hadn’t watched the video so thought maybe you were right.

But having watched it, I dont think they are at close quarters.

PS – Don’t worry, I’m not gonna moan at you about covering this development in the Pell saga….but….it has taken a pretty crazy turn, with some wild claims. Broadsheet Towers may be intrigued. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/oct/05/george-pells-lawyer-calls-for-investigation-into-claim-bribes-paid-to-influence-sexual-assault-case

@newsjustin – Latest turn in the Pell says indeed nuts but you can chalk one thing down, Pell is no innocent victim. They are each as mad and power hungry as the other.

          1. newsjustin

He is not innocent, or rather, he’s not blameless, as the Royal Commision report there shows. But the unsafe guilty verdict in the case brought against him, charged with abusing children, was quashed due to lack of evidence to possibly support the verdict. Thats a fact.

The claims out of Rome that Pell’s nemesis in Rome, since sacked for being a complete crook, bribed people to make the case against Pell happen, is a remarkable one. And, if there’s substance to it, will have major ripples in Oz.

I agree. Bodger’s mask point is simply smart-alec cynicism. A bit snerry akin to a truculent teen.

If we’re thinking they were wearing masks inside, then we’ve another think coming

One rule for you and another for me… etc

Michael McDowell talking sense in this statement from today:

    https://www.michaelmcdowell.ie/calls-on-coalition-to-reject-nphet-level-5-advice.html

“I am appealing to the leaders of the coalition and to their parties to reject the NPHET advice and to articulate with conviction, courage and honesty a different course for Irish society over the next number of weeks and months. The NPHET path is neither necessary nor sustainable – politically, socially, or economically.”
