Took a trip to Maynooth last Saturday for valid reasons (wife needed something from College) and there was a checkpoint on the M4 between Celbridge and Maynooth exits going towards Maynooth (around 3.30PM).

There was a holding van and maybe 10-12 empty cars on the side of the road and no sign of drivers (I presume they were in the holding van?).

They barely even looked at us, not even for tax and insurance, just waved us through. Very odd I must say, what exactly where they looking for?

I saw that too and thought all those cars were belonging to the gardai themselves? Free work parking!

lidtened to that poor lady this morning

    It’s inhumaine
Just walk in these peoples shoes and you will beg for release

Why can they just not let them have human touch and if the family wear ppe or a hamza suit the inmate or resident will not be at much worse risk

These are not cans of beans but humans with feelings not to be held in solitary confinement denied love

    Covid cares nothing about Christmas
All it cares about is spreading and if we just drop our guard then covid will be in like a shot

If we open up for Christmas covid will spread

It’s better to just lock down totally like New Zealand and do exactly what they did

We can do what mainland Europe cannot

We are an island like New Zealand which now have returned to normality

    It’s a no brainer

      @Len

New Zealand along with Australia is in the top five self-sufficient food producers in the world.

New Zealand has a tourism sector worth over 40 Billion annually – 23 billion of which is domestic.

They could lockdown indefinitely and not even break a sweat.

Ireland is NOT the same as these countries.

@Daisy – please stop calling people stupid just because you don’t agree with them. People like you are the problem.

No country could lockdown fully for any length of time in this day and age.

Too many external components for all manner of industries, from chemicals for food production and farming, to construction and many more for anywhere, but especially an island like NZ to go for too long. They might get away with 6 or even 12 months but eventually stocks of medicines and similar will go out of date and the ingredient stocks will run dry etc.

Globalism is a double edged sword.

Don’t think that New Zealand ever stopped freight coming into their country?

Wasn’t that what they said got them into trouble after the “100 days success” – the virus was brought in by air freight.

They were only concerned with stopping their people moving about. Which is why I gave food and tourism as examples.

I suppose you could keep all crew on their ships for that, be tough on them though? Although do they even get off at each port or just drop off and go, not really that up to speed on how it all works?

I don’t have details for New Zealand, but its southern hemisphere neighbours spent 112 days in lockdown. It’s spring, that time of year when seasonal respiratory diseases decline.

If we’re to attempt that, we’ll need to be in lockdown until Feb/March or so. Given our mortality rate is in line with previous years, any further lockdown will do more harm than good.

I can see them keeping the numbers low over summer, as respiratory diseases are low in summer, but then what? No oversees travel without 14 days detention?

No-brainer? I’d rather look closer to home. Sweden perhaps.

I was stopped last weekend and asked what was the purpose of my journey. The guard was pleasant and didn’t enquire whether I was within 5km of my home. So, a brief encounter but surreal nonetheless.

Why is BS regularly citing JHB or her show as a source of intelligent comment? She’s the journalistic equivalent of damp whopee cushion.
