Letter From Behind The Front

at

Last night.

The Limerick Protestant Young Men’s Association (LPYMA) writes:

We’re intrigued and excited: we have just discovered this envelope behind an inscription plate on our Great War Memorial! “To be opened by some responsible person, when found.” 14th of January 1921.

99 years.

In fairness.

You may be right – HJ Arnett was a sculptor based in Oxford (there’s some mention of him in the Limerick leader ~1890s , so some connection to the place)
He would have been an auld fella by the time he hid this. Wonder what he needed to get off his chest?

Just heard about this on Joe Duffy. The person who hid it there ‘to be opened when found’ could not have known when it would be uncovered. Interesting and intriguing. One wonders what he understood by ‘responsible person’. Presumably whatever is in the letter has consequences that he wanted followed up. It is of interest to historians and after 100 years should be opened publicly.
