Aer LIngus is suspending publication of its in-flight magazine Cara

This morning.

Via Independent.ie:

…Cara didn’t have to print in high volume, but it was read by millions of passengers every year, and the production values reflected that. By the end of the month, copies were dog-eared, but hanging in there. And countless passengers will recall pulling fresh copies from seat-backs at the beginning of the month, inhaling that newly-minted whiff as they opened the pages…

That’s a pity, always an enjoyable in-flight read. I suppose in the aftermath of Covid, they would be required to provide each passenger with a fresh copy, which would have added up. One less outlet for freelance writers.

You know what – I actually thought Cara was one of the better airline magazines. Always read it on an Aer Lingus flight. Sad to hear this. So I guess it’ll just be catalogues of crap or glorified ones that most airlines, even legacy carriers, now offer?

One of the more mediocre inflights unfortunately – filled with all the cliches of design and writing. Sign of the times; there will be almost no in-flight mags left in 3-4 years

But a damn sight better than RyanAir’s offering, a few greasy pages describing the contents of the shopping trolley.

That’s not an inflight mag, it’s a menu. BA does a decent one as do most of the US airlines – Cara unfortunately was something of a throwback (lots of service journalism, PR-generated content, and awful design).

Funny then how its entire composition and relaunch was conceived and produced in conjunction with the editorial and design teams who produce BA’s High Life … funny how they often referred to it as one of the best customer magazines they produced … they mustn’t have had your incredible insight, Dan, but hey, at least we do … :0)

That’s not a bad idea SB.

The rights to Cara have bounced around a couple of times. A company I used to work with once published it – so hopefully someone with a new vision for it might get it and we’ll see it back in some form or another.

Always thought it was a good intro to Ireland for tourists.
