To be clear, Ireland’s fatality rate would have already made this impossible, EVEN IF 100 PER CENT of Irish people had already caught the virus. Many countries, including the UK, have had a multiple of our population fatality rate.
This sign is, I guess, claiming a fatality rate of 0.04%, but South Dakota, for example, has a case fatality rate of 1.3% (33 times higher), and they have a POPULATION fatality rate of 0.13% and climbing fast.
The sign is talking about the IFR, the Infection Fatality Rate.

So recovery rates are 99.95% for under 70s and average of 99.77%
Remedial reading lessons perhaps.
So far, there have been 2100 deaths in Ireland. Even if you assumed that 100 per cent of people in Ireland had been infected, and that not a single further death occurs, that figure cannot be true.
And Ireland is low on the deaths per population scale. 0.13% of the population of South Dakota are already dead. How do you square that with a claim of 0.04% infection fatality rate? You expect them to come back to life and then recover?
And why does ‘not dead’ mean recovered? What of the people currently in ICU? Or young people still suffering with dramatically reduced lung capacity months later?
Why pick South Dakota? it is #9 in the USA
New Jersey has 1,965 deaths per million population or 0.20%
New York is at 1,798 deaths per million population or 0.18%
In Europe Belgium has 1,492 deaths per million population or 0.15%
Most of the deaths in Ireland were over 70 with co-morbidities and their IFR is closer to 5% than 0.05%

One of the most worrying things about the death rate in the USA is the fact that the virus kills fat people quicker than people closer to an average weight. Especially in the mid west states, where people are fatter and have less access to good heath care. They might even be many hours drive from a hospital. The USA is heading for 300,000 deaths in the next few weeks, and they rarely explain why so many are dying, but physical condition and fitness have a lot to do with it.
Junkface – well made point. You might look at the underlying diseases. In particular look at non-transmissible diseases like cancers. My sense is we are heading down a road of more synthetic treatments for more synthetic diets. For years we joked about the western diet. We sniggered at the fat people of Walmart videos etc. In a calm way can others plz contribute.
