Oscar’s Café and Bar, Smithfield, Dublin 7
‘Regrettably we wish to advise that under the advice of An Garda Siochana we will no longer be offering the facility of our Suspended Meal for the Homeless and will require a substantial meal to be consumed (or not consumed as the case may be) with the purchase of an alcoholic drink.
We have nothing but the utmost respect for the Gardai who are just enforcing the current legislation. It was never our intention to circumvent the law. It was done with the best of intentions with what we thought was a common sense approach to dealing with unecessary food waste.
Any money raised to date will be passed onto Brother Kevin’s Capuchin Centre along with a €1000 contribution from Oscars.
We thank everyone for the fantastic support to date and wish you all a happy and safe Christmas.’

Dublin pub told by gardaí it must serve food after suspension of €9 meal (Irish Times)

They knew full well what would happen and we’re just trying to get some free publicity, at least they’re giving 1k+ to charity but it would have cost many multiples of that to get the coverage they got for free.
And your opinion on the food waste is?
that being said broadbag
this is one of those scenarios where “the law is an arse”
speaking as someone who has some knowledge of this particular situation….I say someone has to publicise it and I’ll give them a pass on the motives. what’s happening here is IMMORAL. full stop.
yet another “unforseen consequence” borne of FFG dumbass thinking
Food waste is bad, law is an ass, agree with you both, but that doesn’t change the fact that these are the guidelines they’re allowed to operate under, if they don’t like it don’t open, otherwise what’s the point of having the rules in the first place, if everyone starts doing their own thing it’s chaos.
practically speaking, on the ground, I can tell you for a fact this nonsense does virtually ZERO to promote or engineer any form of C19 related health and safety behaviour
get out into town next weekend for a couple of hours, you’ll see
it’s a nonsense zero sum game
on a separate subject, sympathies to any Liverpool supporters out there, RIP Gérard Houllier
This has been explained time and again but what’s once more?
The government wanted to open restaurants after the first lockdown but not pubs because pubs meant more mixing and less social distancing than sitting at a table eating a meal. The pubs complained because they serve food and leaving them out was discriminating against them. The compromise was that they would open to serve food and the €9 substantial meal was introduced as the bench mark to prevent people ordering a cheese sandwich or a packet of crisps just to get around the guideline. The 105 minute limit is for the same reason. It’s supposed to give people time to eat their meal and then leave.
Not all pubs can provide hot food so many of them did deals with local takeaways. That’s been ended this time round as the rules now insist on an on premises kitchen.
Of course people are ignoring all of this because people are going to the pub for pints and socialising, not for the food, and the enforcement of the 105 minutes just means people move on to the next pub and order food that they have no interest in eating.
The guidelines are supposed to help prevent the spread of the virus but, for many people, that comes second to a night out and personal responsibility be damned.
The guidelines are supposed to help prevent the spread- BUT….
And that will be the Reeling in the Years opening line for 2020- in other words. slavishly following the Chinese Communist Party did not make a blind bit of difference.
Oh, are the Chinese Communist Party running NPHET now? As well as interfering in the US election? Busy chaps.
I’m willing to bet that Reeling in the Years for 2020 doesn’t take its lead from some people banned from YouTube or people who ignore what they know so that they can spread misinformation.
Repro
you’re not wrong in anything you’ve typed, I know ze “guidelines”
I’m just relaying my practical on the ground floor factual experience
it just isn’t working (whomever’s fault it is or isn’t ) and into the bargain is causing this really dreadful side-effect, utterly immoral wastage
it’s a half-assed answer to a question – in my opinion you either open up or you don’t. black and white. this €9 substantial meal nonsense is a curiosity we will wonder and criticise in ten years from now when we see it on “Reeling in the Years”
Not disagreeing with you goldenbrown, just laying out the thinking behind the guideline.
Personally I think the €9 substantial meal is a farce. They should have either held the line and told pubs to remain closed or let them all open. It’s not as if this flaunting of the guidelines is a surprise to anyone.
The people who aren’t eating the food are the asses. They need to eat dinner. Why are they wasting money and food? Twits.
Saved on wages

The €9 rule is because restaurants are allowed to open not pubs. However some pubs function as restaurants and so are allowed to open in that capacity only. It isn’t rocket science and Oscars 100% were trying to circumvent the law.

looks like they got their hire eventually, more free publicity
fair play to Oscars. As for the guards, you’d think they’d have better things to be doing. But from what i see, they only ever go for the easy gigs.
