“Here comes another winter waiting for utopia, waiting for hell to freeze over.”
I quite enjoy aspects of winter, never been to utopia, thought I was in hell. never saw it freeze over though.
    Happy Friday one and all

Admin, once again, what’s the craic with my links not appearing. My entries for this have disappeared, and frankly I’m getting a bit ratty about it now.

      1. millie bobby brownie

Bodger, just so you know, I’ve posted my entries again, using the app and desktop to no avail apparently. Not sure which gremlin I pissed off this week.

I’ll add my entries sans link, hope you don’t mind Nick.

More accurate to say, thought you were going to go Centimetres than KiloWatts as both are examples of the metric system of measurement.

        1. Slightly Bemused

Millie, this occasionally happens to me too. And sometimes a while later they appear. I never figured it out, it can be frustrating

          1. millie bobby brownie

Thanks for that Bemused! Nice to know it’s not just me. I just assumed that I had been put in moderation, but the links have never reappeared (to my knowledge). It’ll likely resolve itself, as you say.

  4. A Galaxy Very, Very Near

It can only be Tori Amos’ WINTER.

A haunting and beautiful song about the relationship between a father and his daughter and the inevitable passing of time.

Snow can wait I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart when I think of winter
I put my hands in my father’s glove
I run off where the drifts get deeper…

The title may not seem wintery, but it’s a longing for the end of winter, April come she will, to quote Art Garfunkel. but the line below about winter really reflects how I feel about seasonal affective disorder

“And I go deaf and I go dumb
If I don’t see the winter sun”

    Nick Mulvey – April

Here’s a terrible Winter dittie by the immortal David Bowie. So bad its…baaddd!!!

    Sell Me A Coat
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEUZEUKKYI4

Truly one of his worst songs ever, a bit like visiting 1960’s Carnaby street on acid playing a Beatles track backwards :)

Lyrics, a bit dodgy calling them lyrics!

“La la la la la la, la la la la la la la
A winter’s day, a bitter snowflake on my face
My summer girl takes little backward steps away
Jack Frost took her hand and left me, Jack Frost ain’t so cool”

( But Ziggy soon came along and re-invented rock music, style and rebooted culture whilst making it o.k. to be a bit different so all is forgiven)

Can I have a prize now please?

    Norman Greenbaum – Grade A Barn (1972)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJs15FOYUCY

A charming little folk ditty about about a rock star escaping to the country to build a barn for his goats before winter arrives. (Ry Cooder on mandolin)

    Taking my royalties
    And putting them in
    To this goat dairy
    Oh me, oh my
    Such a long way
    From ‘Spirit in the Sky’

  8. Rosette of Sirius

A rather apt and melancholy song for year we’re in from The Counting Crows from their second album “Recovering the Satellites”

Whilst not as good as their genuinely fantastic first album, August and Everything After it did have some very good tracks. I always felt that the following track was a bit out of place on this album and perhaps belonged but didn’t make the cut for their debut. And given the single was padded with tracts from said debut, perhaps that’s correct but who knows.

    A Long December

    https://youtu.be/1D5PtyrewSs

Here are some of the lyrics….

A long December and there’s reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can’t remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin’
Now the days go by so fast

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it’s all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

  9. millie bobby brownie

It’s a tad early for this one, but it’s a lovely little winter tune by the Decembrists and perfect for listening to on a chilly evening like this one. Also, winter gets worse in Ireland right through til mid April, when suddenly it’s summer again.

    January Hymn

  10. millie bobby brownie

Now I know this might seem a bit early in the season for this pick, but January Hymn by the Decembrists is a really lovely little tune, very mellow and easy to listen to.

I highly recommend listening to it of a cold miserable winters evening (not unlike this one). As it is, winter in Ireland gets worse after Christmas and continues into mid April, when suddenly it’s summer again.

Sorry again for the lack of link, but it is easy to find on youtube, and I highly recommend checking it out

          1. Rosette of Sirius

It’s a Doctor Who reference to my name, however, it’s origin is far removed… I am however, from Quaxxann and that’s a planet that orbits the star Betelgeuse….

  11. Andy Pipkin

If ever there was a song so apt for the year we’ve had, it has too be this, and let’s me honest, no playlist would be complete without Joey & Co.

“Winter is here and it’s going on two years
    Swallow my pride
    And things were lookin’ grim
    But they’re lookin’ good again
    Swallow my pride”

The Ramones – Swallow My Pride

    Enjoy!

  12. Bruce's Boss

    Be bland.
    Be very bland.
Suggest the obvious first, before someone else does…

    You won’t win otherwise.

  13. Eugene McAuley

Fairport Convention with the amazing Sandy Denny, Who Knows Where The Time Goes from Unhalfbricking.

“Across the evening sky, all the birds are leaving
But how can they know it’s time for them to go?
Before the winter fire, I will still be dreaming
I have no thought of time…”

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=avpBm-8TgJk

Such a sad song sung so beautifully. Folk at its best.

  19. It Was All A Dream

Most beautiful lyrics ever – Paul Weller with Above the Clouds:

Autumn blew its leaves at me, threatening winter as I walked

  20. Slightly Bemused

I had to chuckle right now, which has strangely thrown off my timing. I was looking for a song on this list. I did not see it, but given the time I may just have been blind.

It’s four in the morning, the end of December. I am writing you now just to see if you’re better.

I cannot find the link I wanted, so I am giving the one of Jennifer Warnes wonderful interpretation, but she did an incredible live version with Leonard Cohen. If you find it it is worth the visit.

It is four in the morning, and the rain is hitting my window. I may need that Famous Blue Raincoat.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPlpxHhzSp0

    1. Otis Blue

Sincerely, L. Cohen is such a wonderful sign off in the song.

As Kurt Cobain sang “Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld, so I can sigh eternally”. That’s do me.

    1. Slightly Bemused

Many years ago I had to do an essay in school. It was one of those ‘write an essay for Monday’ type of things And I could not figure out what to do.
And this came on the radio, a story evolved, and I felt really good about myself.

      I got a D

But I got to hear a wonderful song.

      1. Brother Barnabas

bemused, any chance you might take requests for your weekly column ? I’d love to read about a time you completely lost the head – perhaps it was a surly teen who was cycling on the path, whereby you manhandled him off his bike, smashed him up against the wall and told him youd punch the fupping head off him next time you caught him at that carry on or maybe the time you roared after some middle aged entitled south county one who strolled through the door you were holding open for her without so much as an appreciative glance – “fupping up yourself cn ut”. just something like that.

        1. Slightly Bemused

          Oh dear!
I was, and still am, too small for that. That is what older brothers are for. I remember one time I was attacked by the local skinheads. I do not remember at all why they did, but one had a hammer.
And one (seriously just one) of my brothers turned up. It was not quite ninja movie, but several bodies went in several directions, and my father inherited a new hammer that he did not expect.
A good friend once told me that my only chance in a fight was to win it in the first move. In a pub in Zagreb a couple of guys got upset with me. Thought I was American. I was coming out of the bathroom, and they just would not let me past. It was quite clear things could get ugly.
So I picked up the bar stool behind me and thwacked them. And then the very nice very large bouncer who I knew very well came and stood between me and them. I was not the one who went home. I knew the owner of the bar, he was laughing. When he stopped he said Boris (not his real name, just appropriate) was not sure who he was protecting from whom.

Not sure if that is what you are looking for, as I was totally clear in my head. My Grandad always said make sure you are clearheaded in the heat. You can lose it afterwards, but if you lose it early, you have already lost it.

I truly hate violence. I have worked in too many places where that is what is used to rule.

But if I have too, I can honestly tell you that there is no way you will see it coming. I watched a brother stand up, and seriously trounce, a gang with a hammer. And he was only one of my brothers. And that is before I mention my sisters.

          Or my Grandfather’s stories.

          1. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I’d say the sisters are the ones to watch ;)
Looking forward to going through these tunes later !

          2. Papi

My brothers, pretty much only advice to me, was, if attacked by a group, take out the mouthy one first then the biggest guy if you can. Never had to use it though, thankfully.

          3. Janet, dreams of an alternate universe

I always kept one of those giant metal industrial plugs, so basically a heavy rod in my handbag when I had to do late closes, wack of that handbag , you only needed one.

Nuclear Winter by Sodom, a metal classic :)

    Lyrics…

    Make us die slowly
    Nuclear winter
Clouds of dust will hide the sun forever, celebrate
    Nuclear winter
    Blows straight into your heart
    Nuclear winter
Day of tomorrow we’ll go through
    Make your testament
