I find it hard to believe that anyone who can afford to live in Sandycove would vote for SF.

Eccentrics abound. At least the neighbours won’t have to go scrambling through the eircode finder in an emergency.

Roger Casement was born in Sandycove, and he a gunrunner.

Yes, but at that time, SF weren’t proposing to increase the dole by one-fifth and have everyone earning over €50k to pay for it…

I’m talking about people who vote for these parties; people who are elected for them are inevitably as middle-class as RBB or Mary Lou.
Brother Barnabas
RBB topped the poll in the last election in that constituency – a lot of his votes came from the traditionally working class areas of DL-R like sallynoggin, ballybrack etc (although youd be hard pressed to find a house in any of those areas for less than 500k now so hardly working class now), but couldnt have done that without a lot of support in staunch middle class areas like sandycove, glenageary, dalkey. I know of loads in those areas that voted for him. me being one.
Rob_G
Well, I suppose that they are looking forward to the PBP abolishing property tax, so understandable, I guess.

Rob, you forget that DLR has one of the oldest populations nationally. They expect good public services, which the left wing have traditionally been more protective of.
Its not that surprising, in fact south Dublin was always ‘fur coat, no knickers’ to us northsiders.
Bob
You almost make it sound like a bad thing

I’m from around there and voted RBB / SF in the last election as did all my family and many of my friends living in the locality – RBB topped the poll …

believe it or not, rob, some people with money still believe in the merits of a more equitable society

It’s a sad society that judges folk by who they vote for. Or indeed, where they live, where they work, the schools their kids attend, etc.

“It’s a sad society that judges folk by who they vote for.”
– that’s stupid – of course I judge people who vote for Fidesz, Vlaams Belang, the BNP… Or SF.
Brother Barnabas
how on earth is SF in any way comparable to the right-wing populists you mention ?
Rob_G
Well, awful as all of the above parties are, SF has killed more innocent people than all of the others put together – hundreds of times more, I expect.
Also, SF are arguably both left-wing populists and right-wing populists at the same time.

“ We Deliver” indeed. SF sit in a power-sharing assembly in Stormont which is completely dependent on Westminster. Their glorification of Provo cowardice continues to alienate Unionists making a United Ireland a much longer term prospect. Great job, that was worth hundreds of lives. Mallon was right: Sunningdale for slow learners.

So when the IRA was killing people in pursuit of independence in the south, that was good.
When the IRA did the same in the north it was bad? Gotcha.
