Mourne Mountains and Killarney National Park ablaze because selfish farmers set land on fire to clear it.

    1. Steph Pinker

Daisy – why are you always looking for a fight and being so negative towards so many different communities within society? You must be knackered! If any land within the two regions you’ve mentioned are ‘ablaze’ it’s nothing to do with farming or the National Parks staff – it’s probably due to gobshites with cans, firelighters and a few Trojan in the back pocket – if it isn’t, it could be a relative of yours – especially considering how angry you are 24/7 on BS.

      1. Donald McCarthy

The real issue is with flammability, not culpability. In a rapidly warming world with long periods of drought we can expect to see spontaneous combustion due to lightening strikes (increasingly common due to “weather weirding”) or sun acting on glass or decomposing vegetation generating excessive heat (think of damp hay catching fire). Few humans were about in the Siberian tundra which burned for most of last year and is still smouldering. Australians too have given up looking for moral panics as the fires rage. But it is easier to blame someone rather than everyone.

      2. Daisy Chainsaw

Of course it’s to do with farming! Who stands to gain from land quickly cleared by burning? It’s either naive or disingenuous to think it’s all to blame on secret bbqs or a carelessly discarded bottles that magnify heat.

I know people are going to jump on and say change the tune! But I cannot understand how Broadsheet insists on putting the “Irish” Mail on Sunday always at the top. Compare the Sunday Business Post to the IMoS. The SBP has mostly Irish stories/columnists. When the Indo appears, they’ll probably be similar. However, the IMoS practically every Sunday have some British lead, today it’s Kate Garraway, they’re obsessed with Meghan, Harry, Kate, Boris, etc. BS, it’s not an Irish paper any more!! Please promote some proper Irish papers!!

    1. Bodger

Tommy, they kindly send us their covers every evening. The others we usually have to go searching. The placing is by way of a thank you.

      1. Tommy Bohan

You’re one of the bosses Bodger and obviously you do as you see fit. But if you compare the front page of the IMoS above to both the Sindo and SBP then you can see there is very little effort been made by the IMoS on supporting Irish writers/contributors/photographers etc. It has been mentioned here before that it would be nice to have more regional papers here, or even international ones. The amount of British ones on here is very high. And I would call the IMoS a British paper at this stage, with so little Irish content in it. The bosses in London are clearly using it as a money making effort now i.e. sell as many copies yet put no resources into it.

        1. Bodger

Tommy, the IMOS have an excellent investigative spread today on the remains at the Bessborough Mother and Baby Home. They were also the ones who broke the Tuam story.

    2. Cú Chulainn

Tommy, would it be fair to say that you don’t like the ‘Irish’ Sunday mail being included in the BS papers post ?

      1. Tommy Bohan

I just object to them been put at the top of the list. I have read Bodger’s reply (and will reply to that) and appreciate that not all Irish papers make much effort in providing their front page, but clearly there is favouritism shown. I wouldn’t classify the IMoS as Irish anymore (or the Irish Daily Mail), the amount of Irish content they have is paltry. Just look at their front page today. Could they do no better than have Kate Garraway on it? Was there no Irish picture they could find? If you look back on their front pages, the number of stories about Meghan, Harry, Kate even Boris is ridiculous. They are more like a paper you would see if you were in middle England! And I don’t have anything against the English at all (except Charger!!) I just expect a so called Irish paper to look like one. They now sell less than 50,000 copies,, not too long ago they sold well over 100,000. And while all papers have lost circulation, their fall has been particularly rapid. I used to buy the IMoS years ago, but it was a vastly different paper then. Now I would safely say that at least 70% of it is just a copy of what is in it’s British edition, and they still charge a premium price for it. Rant over!

        1. scottser

More to the point, placing Irish news in an international context is a really interesting and valuable initiative and BS are to be commended on it. Its just that the UK aspect of that context is massively overrepresented on here. Seriously, one UK title is enough, or if we must have more can we at least have a northern paper? Its kind of laughable that we don’t have one.

  3. eoin

So no return to normal life without dodgy vaccine. This is insane. More and more reports are appearing of ‘vaccinosis’ and other injuries. These will snowball over the next few months. The vaccine program needs to be stopped now.

    1. Donald McCarthy

And while we’re at it can we call for an end to general anaesthetics which kill people every year?

    2. Daisy Chainsaw

What “vaccinosis” reports? Any searches bring up links to vets and animals, not humans.

  4. goldenbrown

    Frank Of Ireland

(although the 1st episode is a disaster) the rest of it are little masterpieces

    I was wrong

      1. goldenbrown

        Janet
maybe retry starting with Ep. 2 and there’s a chance you might circle around to watch the whole thing again, more going on than meets the eye

(Ep.1 is bizarre….feels almost like a crap pilot episode and it defo put me off initially but it all comes together in the end)

          1. Micko

I caught the Gleesons in The Walworth Farce in the Olympia a few years back.

            They were excellent.

      1. goldenbrown

yep, I’m a bit of a thick when it comes to movies and plays so have to watch things twice sometimes to get it

      1. Charger Salmons

        Sure do kiddo.
He’s the most popular choice for Prime Minister.

        http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/mar/14/boris-johnson-is-voters-clear-choice-for-pm-in-new-poll

And the word on the street is Labour are going to poll badly in the upcoming local elections, mayoral elections and the Hartlepool by-election in what has always been a safe-as-houses Labour seat.
Boris delivered Brexit and vaccines and despite one or two mistakes in the pandemic ( very few major countries didn’t ) polling shows the public are genrally happy with how he handled it.
Isn’t it strange how reality rarely matches the reporting on the Tory toff in the Irish media ?
They’re still waiting for him to come a cropper.
        Marvellous™

        1. Tommy Bohan

Do you have any figures i.e. plus and minus?
You are very quick to have figures for party support.
So can you give us the latest figures for his approval ratings please?

          1. Charger Salmons

Why not look it up yourself Tommy ?
Perhaps if you complained less about the order of appearance of the newspapers on BS if would free up your time to use a search engine …

That’s four consecutive posts from you saying what a rotter Boris is.
            Including several you’ve repeated before.

Blind Nationalism, of all hues is frankly… in a very dark way… hilarious, hearing/listening to ‘yes’ men like your good self who are unable to form their own opinions or have a backbone about any of their convictions, their inability to do anything other than toe the party line… what can I say…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukJ5dMYx2no… 150000 dead and your still waiving the flag to the Dear Leader Delinquent Dad

‘For most normal people, politics is a distant, occasionally irritating fog. Failure to comprehend this is a fatal flaw in most politicians. It leads them to focus on the small not the big picture. It means they get things out of proportion, it breeds paranoia and it stops them from understanding what really moves and matters.’ -Tony Blair.

      Boris gets it.
His ESL coup de grâce is just the latest example of his ability to divine the public mood outside the Westminster Village.

      1. ce

“Boris gets it. His ESL coup de grâce is just the latest example of his ability to divine the public mood outside the Westminster Village.” -Totally, keep the plebs onside with bread (or in the case of the Tories, food banks) and circuses.

What’s it like not being pure enough to be let into the club – staying outside doffing your cap at your betters – is it cold on the curb, looking through the window at the Bullingdon Boys quaffing the really high class stuff, as you take another swig out of the Aldi gin? You want to be let in so bad, but your blood just isn’t blue enough or exotic enough for them to give you a chance… you’re just not classy enough, not even new money enough or dirty Russian/Saudi money enough to at least get one foot in the door… Life as a useful idiot….

        1. Unreal

Haha in the Crown, Lady Thatcher is portrayed at despising all those sort of high born people – yet she begot Cameron and Cameron begot Johnson etc

Sir Ian Duncan Smith is a rather good egg though

That’s funny – less than 24hrs ago I posted a link about info from Israel and you said “And Israel- yes definitely a country we should be modelling ourselves after.” Even though I was just showing information from Israel like you’re doing right now. How strange.

Well since Israel are back in your good books you should have a glance through the following.

      https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56868383

“Mr Leshem said herd immunity was the “only explanation” for Israel’s continued fall in cases as more restrictions were lifted.
“There is a continuous decline despite returning to near normalcy,” he said.
“This tells us that even if a person is infected, most people they meet walking around won’t be infected by them.””

^^ vaccines are working. Stopping asymptomatic transmission and are functioning as vaccines always have, to remove the virus from a community. Good news M – as long as enough people get vaccinated.

      1. Micko

Israel is not in my “good books”. I still think they are experimenting on their citizens.

Chances of a 30 year old having heart issues from Pfizer vaccine – looks like 1 in 20000 (according to that report)

Chances of a 30 year old dying from Covid – 1 in 250,000.

Keep the vax for those who are old or vulnerable.

Keep it away from younger people and those looking to have kids someday. They don’t need it and we don’t know the long term effects.

I really don’t think my stance is that controversial.

        Seems rather sensible to me.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/citizens-assembly-votes-to-delete-and-replace-constitution-s-women-in-home-clause-1.4546882

I’m wondering when the referendum can be held – hopefully this will be a better change for all those who are in ‘caring’ roles, whatever they may be.

However, as Matt Carthy pointed out yesterday, as deeply, deeply, deeply, problematic as the current wording is, all governments never actually managed to fulfil the pledge in the first place… “shall not be obliged by economic necessity”….

On a related note – Can we turn the citizens assembly into a reformed Seanad?

    1. Cú Chulainn

Now there’s an idea.. a people Senate.. for the people by the people sort of thing.. might be veering a tad close to actual democracy for the powers that be, but great idea nonetheless..

      1. ce

Not just that – they have all been run very well in terms of how ideas are explored in a way that the Dáil and Seanad as currently constituted can’t do. The current Seanad electoral system in incredibly problematic as everybody knows. With all bicameral systems having a clear distinction between the two chambers is always tricky, particularly in non-Federal systems, it seems pointless to bring in some kind of list system etc…. it will just reinforce the party system and cronyism. So some method that mirrors… or basically is… the citizens assembly model might.

There are very competent people in all Irish political parties… and plenty of muppets too… they’ll always be somewhat strangled by the whip system. Having a second chamber free from that might also offer support to the more competent TD’s to push things a little in the Dáil too… call me a dreamer…

        1. scottser

The original Athenian democracy had a third house, the boule, made up of a citizens assembly that would propose legislation to the representatives. You weren’t allowed to vote unless you did your stint in the boule.

UK to send more than 600 pieces of vital medical equipment – including surplus ventilators and oxygen concentrators – to India to support the country in its fight against Covid-19 the UK Government announces.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/56876695

C’mon Mehole, time to step up to the plate and show your support.

( There are nearly 12,000 Indian citizens living in Ireland )

    1. ce

That should just about cover the payback for the occupation and the Churchill Chemical Weapons Attacks… boom boom… in fairness the Mughal Empire wasn’t exactly the Mughal Happy Fun Time Club… anyway now that the glib statement is out of the way…

The Irish Government are in talks with the Indian government to see what India would like them to contribute… rather than simply doing a bit off Boris bunny-hugging virtue signalling

Seems also to be a problem with the Indian army and oxygen supplies among other things, and of course Modi’s government – as a populist poop show – encouraging political rallies etc. wasn’t really taking the pandemic serious until very recently… bit like the Handshaking Haystack… Eton for Life or until everybody else dies!!!

    2. Charger Salmons

I fear India is going to become Ground Zero of the pandemic.
In one city alone half of the population have Covid.
Despite huge strides in technology and commerce much of the country is still mired in poverty.
The virus is going to unleash unimaginable horrors as it threatens to become a humanitarian disaster.

      1. ce

Agreed – not much else to say, such a terrible potential to destabilise the broader region too

Every effort to help has to be explored and asap

Basically this is the nightmare scenario that has threatened to rear it’s head since the beginning… I hope the powers that be have actually learned some lesson as to what to do

  7. Nigel

Here are the numbers concealed by that mere point-something of a percent:

‘Virus ‘swallowing’ people in India; crematoriums overwhelmed’

‘The 349,691 confirmed infections over the past day brought India’s total to more than 16.9 million cases, behind only the United States. The Health Ministry reported another 2,767 deaths in the past 24 hours, pushing India’s fatalities to 192,311.’

    Charger’s Jab Jibber-Jabber™

Congratulations to Ireland are in order.

117 days after 79-year-old Dubliner Annie Lynch became the first person in Ireland to receive a Covid 19 vaccine the country has passed the magic one million mark of people who have received their first jab.

Meanwhile in the UK 33 million have now been given their first inoculation or 50.4% of the total population.

    Onwards and upwards.

    1. Tommy Bohan

It is funny how you are so free with all your numbers. I asked you earlier to give me the numbers for Boris’s approval ratings and you said I should go Google them. This from a person who constantly gives us numbers. Are you afraid to show thm to us or what Charger? You are very selective in what you post. I think you would make a very good spin doctor for Boris.

      1. benblack

I call for an end to this BULLPOO!

This horrible name-calling and personal attacks on commenters is absolutely demoralising, disappointing and disgusting on this site.

Seriously, this has to stop – PLEASE!

The times are hard enough without having to read all this horribleness, which, once read, cannot be unread.

        1. Steph Pinker

I like ‘horribleness’ and how it sounds when uttered to myself, alone in my cave.

Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it – although, the unread by firelight is a way of life here on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

          1. benblack

The ‘I was only joking’ equivalent – I joke like this with everyone defence.

            Fair enough.

            Just stop the Charger bashing.

          2. benblack

            @Steph

Make sure you get your porridge just right, Goldilocks. I hear the brown bears up there in your Kamchatka Peninsula are fussy eaters and would not be interested in your first edition of Plato’s Republic.

        2. Steph Pinker

ben, I wasn’t winding you up, I genuinely like words and how they sound in the cave of my mind, also, maybe I overestimate other peoples’ sense of themselves, but I was being droll for a moment in time.

Btw, I think the Lady Eliza Half insult was intended for me – thanks for being gallant though.

London, Behold your new Overlord … Count Binface

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/count-binface-london-mayor-qualified-b1837245.html

“Last week, a poll found that the novelty candidate was head-to-head with anti-lockdown activist Laurence Fox in the London mayoral context, with both garnering 1 per cent support in the race.

The count taunted his opponent over the survey result, pointing out he had spent “zero” money yet still managed to match the former actor in the polls.”

Link from Broadsheet used in that article
    https://www.broadsheet.ie/2016/09/05/ill-be-going-into-conversations-with-a-very-open-mind/

“Despite having no work experience in Health Stephen Donnelly became Ireland’s Health Minister in June of 2020, sponsored by the Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin. Senior ministries in Ireland are often run by unqualified suits on behalf of our civil-service swamp. Ireland’s scandal-ridden health department is no different, having been stewarded by a long succession of highly-networked incompetents installed as departmental figureheads for decades.

Even so, Stephen Donnelly’s fast-tracked appointment managed to stand out after his unusual first eight years in politics. At the time Ireland was supposedly in the middle of the most serious health crisis to hit the country since the genocidal potato famine of the 1840’s. Better political options with useful Health Department knowledge were definitely available to Martin – yet for some reason he decided to give Stephen Donnelly the nod.”
