We’re shrinking slightly, but there’s still room for a baby boom. Watch this space.

Deaths in 2018 were 31,116. So extrapolating that to 2020 you might be looking at 31,150 people dying without Covid.

31,765 died – a difference of 615. Covid is connected to 1.839 deaths. suggests that 1200 people who died of covid would probably have died during the year anyway. Which is understandable given the age profile of the virus.

the main cause of death for over 75’s was disease of circulatory system followed by cancer, then other. Death by respiratory disease was second last ahead of accident/suicide. In no age category was respiratory disease even close to the top. In fact in under 15’s it was pretty evenly spread between all categories except death by other which at 79.3% made up the vast majority. I’m no Covid denier but if we are in a pandemic where does this fit into the narrative of lock down?

The obvious conclusion is we need a longer, stricter lockdown to prevent people from going outside in the sun and getting skin cancer. If you disagree its because you’re a sociopath ratlicker who doesn’t care about all these easily preventable deaths.

Exactly, and a ban on all sugar and fatty foods. Some people just cannot be responsible and we need the State to enforce healthy eating habits. Thank God we have the State to parent us all. True freedom of the individual in action.

Theres a bit of a difference between a public health awareness campaign and legally mandatory, police enforced, lockdown orders now in fairness.

If the covid response had been an extensive public health awareness campaign in the media I don’t think anyone, of any political persuasion, would have objected in any way shape or form. Its the year+ ongoing brutal lockdown thats a bit of an issue.

          2. Nigel

I think a lot of people would have objected if the public health response to a global pandemic was restricted to a publicity campaign.

Like a child born anew each day you are shocked that a person with a particular opinion continues to hold that opinion.

“where does this fit into the narrative of lock down?”

If I was a government/public health spokesperson I would say that it shows that lockdown was pretty effective. I’d also point to the fact that lockdown may have curtailed the rate of emergency room admissions, hence permitting ICU staff to cope with the patiens they had, and ensure the best outcome. I’d also point to the notion that it’s not all about death, it’s also about severe disease. Putting ‘long COVID’ to one side there’s good evidence that any bout of severe resipiratory disease that lands you in hospital is an indicator of major risk for poor subsequent health.

And I feel I have to spell it out, but the statement above is not necessarily what I believe myself, but it’s certainly one way of presenting it.

If you look compare Ireland to the rest of Europe that holds true.

Excess deaths for other European countries:
        – Poland: 20.25%.
        – Spain: 19.91%
        – Italy and Slovenia: 19.49%
        – Czech Republic :18.31%.
        – Belgium, Bulgaria and Romania all above 15%
        – Malta, UK, Netherlands, Cyprus, Slovakia, Portugal, France, Luxemburg, Croatia Austria and Lithuana all above 10%
        – Hungary, Greece, Germany, Sweden, all above 5%
        …

        Ireland? less than 2%

Those are very interesting numbers – particularly in relation to Sweden.

We will ignore 2019 figures because mild viral seasons from then do not count.

Swing from branches of local trees in advance as hanging should be a humane practice.

Who would have thunk it! But Ireland came out of 2020 as one of the countries best dealing with Covid!

Looks like we managed the pandemic very well.

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

Oh Cian, the lockdown haters don’t care that excess deaths were minimal. It would have been preferable to have bodies piled high in the streets as long as they could step over them on the way into the pub.

      1. Micko

        “Lockdown haters”

That would imply there are “lockdown lovers” no? Would you class yourself as one Daisy? ;)

I see the countries that Cian listed above and the excess mortality in each

.V interesting – especially Sweden as Millie noted.

        Most locked down.

        All have different outcomes.

No conclusive proof lockdowns had any effect whatsoever.

Too many variables. NOT very science-y eh?

Quasi religion at this stage… tbh

        1. Tinytim

If you followed when each of these locked down compared to their growth rate, and subsequent relative over-run in each their health systems it would seem that the timing of lockdown is significant.

    2. Cui Bono?

The same amount of people would have died without the lockdown.

The lockdowns did not protect the vulnerable because it was focused on locking down the non vulnerable.

Most of our covid deaths were in care homes and hospitals with really old sick people.

Sweden had over 3 times the amount of over 65s compared to Ireland and still had slightly less covid deaths per population in that cohort than we did. Their total deaths were also nowhere near the 175,000 predicted for them without lockdown – and the reason is covid is about 90% less deadly than first thought.

Yes. It happened at the same time as the HSE IT fowl-up – I assumed it was related.

I’d hope we’ll be back on EuroMomo once they are back online.

      1. goldenbrown

foul-up? lol I think maybe you meant to say…

an IT Security Disaster that will be namechecked in every DFIR training manual and event held around the world for years to come under the section heading “What happens when you don’t think it’s important to employ a CISO, expert security team and strategy for a significant organisation of 85,000 people with a sovereign impact, how it affects every man woman and child in that state and how much it costs you in the end”

The drop in marriage figures is what is interesting here.
    (a) Holding out for the big party-wedding?
    (b) Too sick to wed?
    (c) No income to pay for (a)
    (d) It’s off, because being locked-down together was enough trouble and strife?
    (e) It’s off, because partner revealed as a rat-licker?

Didn’t the majority of COVID deaths happen in 2021 though after the lockdown was lifted for Christmas 2020?
