You might get a handful of bumper cars in there but I don’t think we can use the bandstand as a speedway, bad idea.

The photo of the packed massive crowd is there in front of your eyes. Here’s some more photos:

      https://eu.indystar.com/story/entertainment/indy-500/2021/05/30/indy-500-atttendance-2021-what-looks-like-have-135-000-fans-race/7451374002/

No vaccine mandates. In the article from your twitter link, the event promoter says he “expects at least 60 percent of fans will likely be vaccinated”

No enforcement of mask wearing either. Zoom in on the photos on the above site you can see the thousands of people aren’t wearing any.

      Wait two weeks, etc?

It’s outdoors, so that’ll help. The air pollution’ll be cutting a few years off their life-expectancy, though, for sure.

    1. Raymond

Have you ever heard of action bias, the availability heuristic, groupthink or identifiable victim bias?

  2. Micko

Yes, it is at 40% capacity.

    That’s still 135 thousand people.

    How are we doing?

    We’re still banning buskers.

And the government has just extended their draconian powers (possibly till next year)

    1. Nigel

How’re we doing? Being more sensible about things, on the whole, I’d say. But good news, you can fly to Indiana and watch a bunch of cars drive around, if you want to,

      1. Micko

Sensible for who? People who’s lives and jobs and homes aren’t affected.

The music industry in Ireland provides over 700 million to the Irish economy.

It employs about 13000 people directly and about another 10000 in external services.

That’s a lot of mortgages and families depending on that work.

There are no arts, no music and no cultural events happening.

The PuP is being phased out and we have no plan to return to live events anytime soon. Just a few “trial events” happening.

Around the world mass events are returning and people’s livelihoods are being saved. They are showing us that events are safe.

Here, we won’t even allow buskers in the streets, in the open air to make a living.

        And you defend it?

I can’t understand you at all man.

        1. Nigel

You’re right, though ‘more sensible’ is a very relative measure. If we’d had proper protocols and responses in place before the pandemic hit we might have got through it faster and with less damage. Also if we stopped electing mediocrities. Sometimes we lose sight of the bigger picture, and it’s important to be reminded that when governments ignore the warnings of experts it’s the citizens who pay the cost.

          1. Micko

            Awesome!

“ If we’d had proper protocols and responses in place”
“ if we stopped electing mediocrities”

            Great help there Captain Hindsight.

          2. baz

we did not elect NPHET or HSE
^the same people who have built careers ‘planning’ for such eventualities and who were provided blank cheques and the full assistance of the state to carry out their actions

Time to rip the chains off, its not as if we have the expertise to study any models or data as so clearly demonstrated by NPHET and HSE failures

so spare us your blame spreader and climb out from under your bed

          3. Nigel

It’s hindsight proving the people who made the warnings right and the people who ignored them wrong.

baz – having plans in place for emergencies and crises tends to cut down heavily on the overall costs of dealing with and recovering from emergencies and crises. Not having them costs more. Cutting blank cheques when the crisis is upon us may be necessary if you haven’t a plan in place, but it’s a bad approach.

          4. Micko

“ It’s hindsight proving the people who made the warnings right”

Nigel, do you actually believe that the lockdown saved 80 thousand people in Ireland? That’s 85k was ever a possibility- even with worst case scenario?

            https://m.independent.ie/world-news/coronavirus/up-to-85000-irish-people-could-die-from-coronavirus-in-worst-case-scenario-taoiseach-indicates-as-three-more-diagnosed-39029363.html

Are you that far gone man?

            Come one dude.

The modelling was all over the shop.

          5. Nigel

I was referring to the experts who have been warning for years about the likelihood of a global pandemic occurring and the need for responses and protocols to be put in place. They were proved completely right. The same will apply to people warning about climate change. No bloody excuses.

As time passes and the virus is more thoroughly studied we’ll have a better understanding of what the death toll could have been and we can compare it to the models, but straight up appealing to incredulity is just dumb.

        2. TheFerg

          +1 Micko
FF and FG are trying to out-do each other with who can be more “sensible”, it has just led to fuppin’ madness.

    2. george

We don’t have a ban on vaccine exports to enable us to reach the level of vaccination the US have in the time they have.

      1. Micko

US is at 51% and we’re at 35% with a single vaccine.

What do you think the age demographic is for people who go to mass events?

Here’s a hint: it’s the age group that covid doesn’t kill.

The vulnerable are safe. We need to stop being afraid.

-oh some bottomholes here still believe they have ‘powers’-a wannabe cop at a store yesterday almost assaulted a customer cause you have put the mask on BEFORE entering,it’s jaw dropping same people who were screaming believe the SCIENCE now just ignoring it.

-the damage and cost here to bars and restaurants and lives is only starting get measured, eviction moratorium is about end, crime is through the roof,it’s dangerous gives you a rush now walking about alone in many areas, the fat corrupt cops are basically on strike, crying on their donuts over Trump.

    4. wasntmeguard

didn’t know buskers were being banned, when normality resumes i hope they continue to ban them. Useless the lot of them

New York offices are at 16% occupancy,so basically no bridge and tunnel crowd nor tourists.

‘Hoods that have mixed uses-live/work/play or are 24/7 are back open and operating, transport hubs like Grand Central, indoor malls like Chelsea Market are post apocalypse wastelands, almost completely vacant.

New York had no college sports it’s a pro sports town unlike say Atlanta where college ball dominates, getting to the playoffs in the NBA is a distant memory for most, these Nets may be the greatest ball team ever assembled,so everyone is now scrambling for tickets,no idea yet on vac passports, masks, distances, occupancy yet.

Had lunch yesterday in Lupa, table 6 it’s one top restaurants in West Village, service and food was awful,it was about 50% occupied,we have a long way to go in New York with most opting stay out city until Sept, but man those Nets could be greatest NBA team ever:)

It’s a lovely old well renovated bandstand in Stephen’s Green. The hint is in the name… Bandstand. Structurally suitable only for a band.
    It dates from 1887
Over the years Dubliners have enjoyed many music concerts here from a brass band to rock gigs. Barricading it temporarily to protect it will allow folks to enjoy it in future.

Having personally witnessed the densely packed crowd packed onto the stand along with some fools climbing on the ceiling structure it was seriously at risk and probably was damaged . The people on it would have been the first to sue if due to their behaviour it collapsed and they were injured.

I am in full agreement with OPW in barricading it to protect the structure and to prevent injuries.

Sitting nearby I knew something was seriously wrong when a screaming panicked crowd ran through that area. One young mum nearly had her babies pram knocked over by a running idiot whacking it sideways.

Then the Gardai and ambulance arrived for the victim of a stabbing on what should have been a fun enjoyable afternoon for all. The vast majority of young folk in the park that day were just enjoying themselves just as much as the tots and their mums in the playground.

Alcohol and gurriers are a bad mix and ruins the park for everyone

Well that does make more sense. Also to the question why we can’t have anything nice ?
