I had my first summer job at 13 and every summer after to buy the ” glad rags ” deemed non essentials in the household budget, it was great for my confidence, bank balance, kept me out of trouble, learned new skill sets ( answering phone, taking messages, counting stock, laminating menus etc, shredding, photocopies and so on ), I loved that weekly envelope of mulah, there should be an option for kids to do summer jobs.

I was earning a fortune at 16 babysitting at least 5 nights a week. Fiver a night and tenner if I stayed over. Minted!

Picked strawberries from 12 years of age. The farmers would come into the secondary schools just before holidays started and recruit us by the busload. Elfin safety didn’t exist in the 80’s.

Like J, I had paper rounds and coal rounds in my teens. Summer jobs down the golf. Kids leave school never having done a hard days work these days.

Getting your own cash young is both awesome and vital. Independence first and learning that going nuts means a lean week. You look at your mom, in my case, different. Like, how the hell does she do it? Plus I bought my first motorbike which changed everything.

No wonder Dubliners are so dumb – if they bathe in the liffey theyll pick up all kinds of brain-eating bacteria

Only a brain eating bacteria could lead someone to believe that Dubliners in the Liffey is a popular trend
