    The office of the President is autonomous and separate from the other two houses of the Oireachtas, so senators and TDs cannot directly castigate the president from the floor of the Senate or the Dail. Outside the precincts of these houses i.e. on radio-tv or in newspapers, elected reps are free to dissent from the personal opinions of the president. And several do or have done.

    This adoration that Irish people have for Higgins is dangerously akin to monarchism. Nobody is above criticism, when delivered in a parliamentary fashion. The Cathaoirleach is wrong to cite a rule that doesn’t exist.
