There’s a goose-painting Moose loose about this hoose.

Mark, at Jam Art Prints, writes:

To celebrate the long Autumnal nights coming in, we’ve an A3 signed print by Wicklow artist, Maiden Moose to giveaway. Maiden Moose is inspired by the colours and moodiness of the Irish countryside, especially Wicklow, and her faithful dogs that always seem to make an appearance in her work.

For your chance to win an A3 signed print, just tell us your favourite thing about Autumn.

Lines MUST close at 10.45pm.

    Channeling my inner Scrooge:

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
carbon fuels combine to warm my freezing botty.
Their charges growing greater with each passing year
while attempts to curtail their use remains a farce.
Halloween that continues for a month or more,
Nights of bangers terrifying dog and cat.
    Shops adopt a Christmas theme too early;
I’d like to tell them what to do with all their tat.

My favourite thing is the leaves. Even now, you can see the leaves starting to lose their verdancy, curling a bit at the edges, turning shades of ochre and orange and red. It’s one final show before the long, dun-coloured months ahead.

I love when they start to fall in earnest.

There’s a street not too far from where I live, lined with loads of established native trees and the greatest abundance of leaves for stomping through. You can find conkers and helicopters underfoot, when scuffing your feet through the fallen leaves. My daughter collects them like treasure on her walk home from school. We often go up there at this time of year to kick our way through the mountains of leaves, and there is something incredibly nostalgic and comforting and good about holding my daughter’s hand in mine and running at the biggest pile of leaves. This year my son is able to run about with us and he stumbles on wobbly feet through the leaves, often attempting to escape across the street.

And afterwards, we collect the leaves, bring them home and make autumn pictures, which are always inevitably ugly, but it’s not really about that anyway.

I enjoyed that, they always look so pretty until you take them home…
there’s a double entendre in there somewhere

Well you know what they say about women, J.

You’re either the Madonna or the Whore. Can’t be both.*

look I just had a baby so I thought a disastrous color and cut would hide the lumpy wreak of a figure trying to large it ….yes outside City Hall ;) :)

There’s no point me writing about the autumn coming in.. the horse chestnuts pooping from the sky, beautiful red brown, silky to the touch at first and after months rolling through hands and pockets turning into the most exquisite of natures furniture. The squirrels next, tossing empty hazelnut shells on the amused humans underneath. Fired up with fat bellies taking breaks to tease the suburban cats and dogs. The fox cub’s fending for themselves, foolishly brave while mum and dad look on exhausted. Then the leaves start. A trickle at first and seem to keep giving their luxuriant beauty for far too long, until one day in late October a hard wind reminds us of the cycle of life and it’s end, but not before the leaves trap the last of the summer heat, keeping the ground alive longer than it has any right, leaving the long slow smell of sweet decay that remains long after the first fires have been lit and snuggles are the order of the day. Autumn, like the afternoon and evening of a long satisfying boozy lunch.. yes, real life winter will begin again, but for now, it’s still warm and fuzzy and ready for sleep… but, of course.. I think you’re going to win this one..

I love the colours: the warm russets, copper and auburn. I like nothing more than to fold away pale chiffon in favour of an overcoat the colour of moss and tan boots.

I love the weather: brisk walks in the crisp air, fallen leaves crunching underfoot. Evenings by the fire with a book, barmbrack and a mug of tea. If Summer is for extroverts, Autumn is for me.

+ when my partner whinges about being cold…all year round …I actually have some empathy

The briskness of autumn simply brings you closer. In the cooler dark evenings, getting closer for warmth and security is a joy. I love the loose freedom of the summer, but I find the autumn a much more familial and connective season.
