This morning.

Via The Texas Tribune:

The order marks a significant reversal after Abbott previously gave private businesses the choice to mandate vaccines for workers. An Abbott spokesperson said in late August that “private businesses don’t need government running their business.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott bans any COVID-19 vaccine mandates — including for private employers (Texas Tribune)

Lol. Pro choice except when it comes to a woman’s right to choose.

Culture war crap and ironically, like the macabre “Heartbeat Law”, the ones who suffer will be the very desperate and very poor (or in this case ignorant).

Lol. Banning mandatory vaccination is pro choice. Attempting to mix it with the abortion issue is a two way sword.

I agree. It’s a category error to compare two completely different things. This is right-wng reactionary culture-war opposition to the most elementary and basic of public services carried to its logical, most destructive extreme – delegitimising public health measures during a public health crisis. Their opposition to abortion is pure patriarchal misogyny. Completely different.

Both on abortion and vaccine mandate, the actual subject matter is irrelevant to craven Abbot. It’s all about the culture war. On that there is amazing symmetry. Every other consideration – what’s best and safe for Texan women re abortion and the necessity for vaccine mandates pale in comparison. Banana Republic stuff.

Still on the sweeping voting restrictions, on this issue Abbot very much likes the detail.

          Banana Republic as I say.

Is it possible to oppose abortion on non-misogynistic grounds, e.g., on the basis of the human dignity and right to life of very young human beings? Or is all opposition to abortion, in your view, not just ultimately wrongheaded but in bad faith too?

Your motives being pure and high-minded do not obviate the ultimate effect, which is that of denying women health care and forcing women to give birth regardless of whether they want to or not.

Tom, when you’re capable of becoming pregnant yourself, you can choose what you want to do, but you get no say over another person’s pregnancy.

Bitter jokes about the Republicans in the US being pro-pandemic becoming bitter reality. Making measles, mumps and rubella great again.

At no point during any of my pregnancies did I consider my children a clump of cells . But up until that point I did think it a womens right to choose. It’s not, it’s a baby and your killing it . I have to live with the horror that I vehemently supported killing the most vulnerable among us for a fair ole chunk of my life but cognitive dissonance aside and we know it’s wrong.

I wanna start by saying I’m not trying to cause offence or argue with you, I’m genuinely curious to understand the other side of this argument.

When do you consider the pregnancy a baby? is it from the moment of conception? Like if someone got pregnant (i.e fertilisation occurred) and then something went wrong in the first few weeks, is that the death of a baby? Does it become a baby when the embryo finally develops into a fetus (roughly 9 weeks)?

      1. Sam

Yup , moment of conception. We are just trying to remove ourselves from consequence and responsibility. Just because you dont want to be pregnant with a baby doesn’t mean you’re not pregnant with a baby.
But I had convinced myself up until my own pregnancy that it some how wasn’t a child and again it does weigh on me that I was a proponent in the abortion is grand group.

Thanks for the honesty. I’m not sure I could come around to that way of thinking but I respect your beliefs.
