This morning.

Leinster House, Dublin 2.

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy at the launch of his party’s National Minimum Wage (Equal Pay for Young Workers) Bill 2021, which would remove the discrimination against 16-20 year olds who do not earn the same rate of the minimum wage as those older than them.

Don’t know they’re born.

It would my bottom. It’d lower their profits, but they’d still make plenty of money. SMEs are great at playing the poor mouth.

What is the rational for a lower minimum wage for those 16-29?
Was it valid when this was originally introduced?
    Is it valid now?

I think it was designed as an incentive to hire the youth and give them some experience – in a time where unemployment is medium/high, its hard to justify hiring teens when you could hire a more experienced adult at the same cost.

I think technically its called “training wage” isnt it? 1st year of work is lowest rate, then 2nd is slightly higher, then you hit minimum. Or something. Its probably changed a lot since then

Originally termed ‘training rates’, whereby you work for 80% of the minimum wage while you are in training, reaching 100% when skilled. They changed it recently and based the rates on age, which makes the assumption that skill levels increase with age – which is not always the case! Many a seventeen year old knows more or even works harder than a forty year old. Murphy is right to contest this as discriminatory practice.

Though in the first pic he looks like he’s saying ‘get outta my pub’.

This is correct. Mick Junior (18) is working 40 hrs a week in a local cafe doing the exact same work as older staff, but getting paid over €80 a week less. Yet all are on minimum wage, which is €8.16/hr for an 18 y-o, and €10.20/hr for those aged 20+
