This morning.
A compilation of protests across the world over the weekend against covid response measures .
Meanwhile..
…via The Irish Times:
Crucial to understanding the political alienation manifest in the riots is that close correlation between declining trust, or persisting mistrust, in government and institutions and low vaccination rates. Mainstream parties throughout Europe have yet to understand how to tackle that.
The undermining of trust is also an important function of the reliance on social media, with 72 per cent of Americans and 83 per cent of Europeans using the internet as a source for health information.
Users fall prey to an echo chamber effect where tailored recommendations based on their personal “watch history” feed individuals’ concerns and rarely provide alternative or expert views. One of the challenges of the age is how to provide compelling online narratives to cut through the forest of quack medicine.
Um.

Just for the record, we won’t EVER be checking anyone’s claimed vaccine status, and if @niexecutive ever try to force us to, we’ll make alternative arrangements to trade outdoors at markets and car boot sales.

In fairness.

Nice montage that.

Blah blah blah
Call the IT what you like, but if the percentages in the article are correct then social media is the real problem.
No- old media is definitely the problem because people just don’t trust it. Not everything on the internet is mis-information- some of it is pretty on the mark.
When it comes to scientists and experts on SARS-CoV-2/Covid-19, the governmental bias is so obvious, it is a joke.
Covid booster shots have been administered to about 6% of the EU population.
In the UK the figure is 26% – more than 15 million doses.
There’s a very simple reason why the rest of Europe is heading for lockdown and the UK isn’t.
Vaccines – and the speed at which they’re delivered – work.
Here we’re still arguing about charging for antigen tests just in case too many people want one and it inflates the infection rate.
Covid boosters are supposed to be taken 6 months after the second shot.
The UK were ahead of the EU with their original rollout… so have more eligible people
Exactly my point.
But as Ireland’s vaccination rate overtook the UK’s many weeks ago why is this country once again behind the curve in rolling out booster shots ?
The UK is already offering shots to over 40s and could be booster jabbing all adults soon.
what part of “Covid boosters are supposed to be taken 6 months after the second shot.” do you not understand?
On 18 May (6 months ago) the UK had 30.6% fully vaccinated. Ireland was at 13.6%
Last Thursday, the UK had 30.6% eligible for booster. Ireland 13.6%.
Also as of last Thursday, UK had bootsered 21%; Ireland 10%.
Oops, it is 5 months rather than 6 months. Same idea, UK was at 46% Ireland was 29%
It’s in your own answer, you said “many weeks ago”. And, as you acknowledged the booster comes after 6 months, then there are still many weeks to go before the 6 months have passed.
The UK has more cases per million than the EU at the moment.
i like kittens
You know what else undermines trust. Public figures making repeated unequivocal and unqualified promises and assurances e.g. if enough young people get vaccinated then we can return to normality etc. ,in order to coerce people to take certain actions, and then blithely reneging on these promises over and over.
this,
plus dealing with scandals with shoddy cover ups, inquiries that go nowhere, no accountability and at best a mealy mouthed apology while they stiffen up for the next shafting.
“while they stiffen up for the next shafting”
That’s beautiful. Well done!
why thank you
The March of the Cretins. These people don’t even believe in climate change. They probably have doubts about evolution, which in fairness is understandable when you look at them.
Have to say “Sara the badly programmed bot” coders are getting better.
I have doubts about all those things Sara. You on the other hand I’m sure are a fully fledged ‘believer’, who thinks having doubts is a sign of ignorance, not wisdom. You’re akin to a religious fanatic – people who you probably think you’re above due to you embracing atheism.
strange tangent about atheists there Jason
“The undermining of trust is also an important function of the reliance on social media, with 72 percent of Americans and 83 percent of Europeans using the internet as a source for health information.”
Governments have a lot to answer for here, politicians have continually shown over the last 10 years they are not trustworthy, and it has done huge damage to the social contract, which in a situation like this is badly needed.
Haha.
Do you really think that politicians were more trustworthy more than 10 years ago?
LOl..no, but it seems they care less about the general public being aware of it, and are clearly in bed with large corporations.
As they “stiffen up for the next shafting” as @Janet so eloquently put it.
More shafts than the Arigna mines ….
I know, that made me laugh out loud.
Meanwhile in Ireland it’s “tell us what to do next Tony!” (And that’s just the Taoiseach)
It’s hilarious how we think we’ve developed as a nation by distancing ourselves from an institution that ruled by fear… To embracing a new institution that rules by fear.
But hey we’ve got gay marriage and abortion rights so it’s all good.
Some beautiful winter weather has finally arrived
I trust all you freedom fighters will be boycotting scarfs
Wouldn’t want people thinking you could be up for wearing any kind of face covering
Re: Belfast Rally and UDA men- they are easily identifiable in this video- they are all wearing fluorescent jackets.
Best thing I seen about that protest was two flags being waved- a Union Jack and a Tricolour- on the one pole.
Disclaimer: the fluorescent jackets quip is clearly a joke.
No County Club finals made the cut
