Portabello Plaza is blocked off again and will be for the next 18 to 24 months.
DCC have leased the space to a private developer while a hotel (yay) is built beside it. pic.twitter.com/PziUlbGzMM

This afternoon.
Portobello Harbour, Dublin 6.
ESB writes
WTF?
Update:
Me too but I just got off the phone with a lovely council worker who filled me in. The square has been leased out for up to 2 years. She said only part of the square will be gone – but I was down there this morning and most of it is blocked off.

Mr.Keegan and Co save us from hippies again…
Something has to pay for the white water rafting.
To stop the lockdown parties?
People really get worked up about this little concrete square.
It is one of the few non-commercial public spaces in the city that doesn’t close in the evening.
Pretty sure the whole canal doesn’t shut down.
but it has locks… boom boom…
sitting on the ground on the canal is no fun. especially in winter. go to any city in Europe and there’s lots of public spaces. get a snack and you’ll have somewhere to sit and eat it. get a snack in Dublin and you’ll be eating it off a wall and people will be looking at ya like you’re down on your luck. there’s no denying that Dublin City has nothing for its residents other than bars and restaurants.
You could just eat it at home.
Just sayin’.
There are benches along the canal. Nice place to sit.
Yes but it is wet.
Aw, for the love of sweet Jaysus (Or Buddha, Vishnu or what ever god you do or don’t believe in)! We need houses, not hotels. It hurts my tiny brain. It is insulting to people to build hotels when so many people need a home.
hey, greed-heads, leave those swans alone…!
All in all, it’s just more bricks in a hotel.
That’s brilliant, it was a haven for drunks, drug abusers and every sort of other low life
you mean ‘people’.
Big diphthong, pray that life does not deal you such a crappy hand of cards.
BTW, my Mum & I planted that Willow tree 48 tears ago.
You’re hardly a dispassionate commentator then C
Just wondering, when did you get your soul removed?
I had it surgically removed, and got a good price for it on the dark web.
Paid for my house extension actually.
He donated his brain to pay for the extension too.
…I wish I’d planted something 48 years ago…spare that tree!
…in fairness…bigoty possibly means the the tree has been more sinned against than sinning…
House extension… compensation for much ? You don’t have to share
I beg your pardon I’m not a drunk and enjoy sitting contemplating my navel just by the tree.
Hey Madame X, glad that you enjoy sitting under the willow tree! I don’t remember planting it (I was only 2), but Mum always pointed it out to me every time we passed by.
that’s lovely
ah stop drongo ya big moany whingebag. a haven.. lol .. some skateboarding teens smoked the odd joint there. so what? I still managed to sit peacefully and read my book or meet a friend for coffee there during rolling lockdowns. and ya know what? I didn’t get attacked or even annoyed by anyone drinking cans and stuff there. they didn’t harm anyone, you just don’t like certain people and don’t like to see them when ur out and about. same as Owen Keegan. Same attitude.
They’re not building ‘hotels’.
Keegan only delighted to do this. its so unnecessary, but the dictator of Dublin doesn’t like people outside of the demographics he approves of, so a chance to close this down is great in his eyes. and there’s one thing you can be damn sure of, when the hotel opens, the council will have gifted that space to them.itll be mostly closed off, and anyone coming in will be asked to leave. gardai will be regular visitors, to send people on their way.
Lynch all landlords.

Landlords, truly the only unskilled workers.
Polishing a brass neck is definitely a skill…
They aren’t workers.
Leeches
This planning permission was lodged in May 2018 and granted in 2019. Obviously this concerned resident is a newbie – so new that they can’t even spell Portobello
The locals fought the proposal. Dublin City Council refused it. An Bord Pleana – obviously – overruled that decision. When do they ever not?
The development will need initial space for the demolition logistics. Dublin City Council might as well make some money out of it. The place is a kip anyway. Skateboarders and jakeys. There’s a nice tree apparently
This is untrue about the space. It’s a public amenity. If you ever bothered your big behind to go there, you’d realise people of all sorts and cultures use it. Skateboarders are hardly a social threat.
What we don’t need are more hotels and apartments with WiFi for the transient white Euro tourist and tech brigade in the 20-30 age range. Eff off and work and holiday at home. This is a city for communities and families, not your lousy Instagram posts.
I’m from the area. Lobbied against the development at the time. Walk through/by it every day.
There’s nothing there but skateboarders and jakeys. Nothing against skateboarders and jakeys will be jakeys. But that’s what it’s like
It’s still a kip.
… say no more, say no more…
Thanks – totally agreed
Dubliners are so desperate to be “European” – totally foppish pretentious crap. Embrace your true skanger selves
Junk for the Junkies…
What’s the weather like in Limerick?
PS.
How do I know you come from Limerick?
Easy…
If you were from Cork you’d have the balls to say so.
If you were from Galway you wouldn’t care.
If you came from up North you’d know how to shut your mouth.
You’re a Stab-City citizen and I claim my €5.00
DON’T DENIGRATE MY FAMILY, NEIGHBOURS AND LOVED ONES WITH YOUR STUPID AND UNFOUNDED INSULTS.
Haha desperate
Skateboarding doesn’t make the place a kip. Skateboarders are people having fun.
this common “ew skateboarders” view of the square is so stuffy and ignorant. there are some skateboarders. so what? if you only like to see a certain demographic, then cities aren’t for you. there are all sorts at that square. it’s a great mix of all kinds of people relaxing and having a nice time. but people like you only see the people you don’t approve of and then call for the place to be shut down. its people like you who are the real scourge of this city.. not the skateboarders, not the junkies.. you, stuffy conservative types who only want to see well heeled individuals not heir way to and from work. and nothing else. you’re not fit to live in a society with your prejudices. however, there’s probably a job waiting for you in the DCC.
You’d be wrecked waiting up on the papers in order to make a pithy comment…
Hey, enough of that ce, sure I guess you know I’m from Tyrone – the most hated GAA football county in the 31 counties. Kilkenny doesn’t field a football team. But we ARE All- Ireland Champions. Limerick is lovely, there’s Clohessy. Limerick is a beautiful city, the end of The Shannon and all the rest of it.
’tis no Athlone…

Leave her alone, at least Shayna has a life, unlike you, Λ.
Hughie Luas: landlords? Maybe you’re not aware, but *apparently* a fella called Lynch was an Irish slave owner (hence, *lynching*) in the unUnited States during the 18th-19thC.
Maybe it’s in our blood?
Is yer man taking a slash?
